How to Play UNO: Setup, Action Cards, Wilds & Scoring
In standard UNO, each player starts with 7 cards. Match the top discard by color, number or symbol. The first player to empty their hand wins the round, and official scoring continues until a player or team reaches 500 points.
Setup
- Deal 7 cards to each player.
- Place the remaining cards face down as the Draw pile.
- Turn the top card face up to start the Discard pile.
Your turn
Play one matching card or a Wild. If you do not play from your hand, draw one card. If the drawn card is playable, you may play that card immediately.
Action cards
- Skip: next player loses their turn.
- Reverse: direction changes.
- Draw Two: next player draws 2 and loses their turn.
- Wild: choose the continuing color.
- Wild Draw Four: choose the color; next player draws 4 and loses their turn, subject to the legal-play/challenge rule.
Calling UNO
When you play your next-to-last card, call “UNO.” If you fail and are caught before the next player begins their turn, draw 2 cards.
Winning and scoring
When someone empties their hand, score the cards remaining in opponents’ hands. Official standard play uses a 500-point target.
