Scattergories Answer, Scoring & Challenge Rules Explained
Scattergories scoring depends on whether an answer both fits the category and remains unique.
Starting-letter rule
The main answer should begin with the letter rolled for the round.
Duplicate answers
If multiple players give the same answer for the same category, those matching answers do not score.
Unique answers
An acceptable answer that nobody else matched scores one point in the classic rules.
Alliterative answers
Traditional Scattergories rules can reward multiword alliteration when multiple qualifying words begin with the rolled letter; apply the edition’s printed examples consistently.
Challenges
If the table disputes whether an answer fits the category or letter rule, players resolve the challenge under the printed group-vote procedure.
