The White Castle: Duel scores immediate red fan points during play and adds a set of multipliers after both players finish the return round. The most frequent error is counting a purchased influence card that was never improved. Use only the icons from improved influence cards, garden columns where you placed a clan seal, and merchandise you acquired. This reference follows the final-scoring section of Devir’s official English rulebook.
First, record points already earned
During play, red fan rewards move your clan-point counter immediately. Leave those points on the track and add the final categories below. Golden fan values represent points tallied at the end. If your total passes 40, the +40/+80 tile records the number of laps so the marker’s visible position is not mistaken for the whole score.
Final scoring formula
| Category | How to calculate | Common trap |
|---|---|---|
| Coins and Daimyo seals | Add the two kinds left in your shared storage; score 1 point for each complete group of five. | Six total scores 1, not 2. The combined storage limit during play is ten. |
| Food, iron, mother-of-pearl | Score each resource track separately: 0–2 left = 0; 3–6 left = 1; 7 left = 2. | Do not combine food with iron to reach three. |
| Nobori flags | Flag icons × the castle level reached by your courtier (1, 2 or 3). | Do not count rewards on courtier spaces passed over by a two-space move. |
| Katanas | Katana icons × the number of your clan seals in the basic training yard. | Elite-yard seals do not multiply katanas. |
| Kabutos | Kabuto icons × (basic-yard seals + 2 × elite-yard seals). | An elite seal counts twice only for kabutos. |
| Origami cranes | Blue crane icons × white crane icons. | One color with zero of the other scores zero. |
Garden seals contribute the icons shown at the bottoms of their columns, rather than being a separate flat point value in this list. Their immediate tile reward was resolved when you placed the seal. Merchandise provides the icons on the purchased tile. Influence cards contribute their reverse-side icons only after an Improve action flips them; the front-side scroll action was already taken when purchased. These sources can all feed the same flag, weapon or origami formula.
A complete illustrative score
Suppose you end with 7 red fan points from play, 5 Nobori flags, a courtier at level 3, 4 katanas, 3 kabutos, 2 basic-yard seals, 1 elite-yard seal, 3 blue cranes and 2 white cranes. Your 5 flags score 5 × 3 = 15. Your 4 katanas score 4 × 2 = 8. Your 3 kabutos score 3 × (2 + 2 × 1) = 12. Your cranes score 3 × 2 = 6.
You also have 4 coins and 2 Daimyo seals left, so six combined score 1. Your food track is at 7 for 2 points; iron is at 4 for 1; mother-of-pearl is at 2 for 0. Add the immediate 7: 7 + 15 + 8 + 12 + 6 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 52 clan points. These counts are invented to demonstrate the formula; they do not describe a fixed setup or an actual played game.
What if one piece is missing?
With 4 katanas and no basic-yard seal, the katana subtotal is zero even if you bought expensive weapon cards. With 3 blue cranes and no white cranes, the origami subtotal is zero. A bought flag card left face-up on its cost side provides no flag icon for this calculation; improve it before scoring. You may still have received its scroll action when you bought it. This is why the strategy guide compares each icon with its multiplier and the remaining opportunities to improve cards.
Tie-breakers and quick checklist
After all categories are added, the higher total wins. If tied, compare the number of clan seals actually placed. If that is tied, the higher courtier on the social-climbing path wins. If still tied, share the victory.
- Keep the red fan points already on the track.
- Count icons only from improved influence cards, sealed garden columns and merchandise.
- Multiply flags by courtier level, katanas by basic seals, kabutos by basic plus double elite, and blue by white cranes.
- Score leftover coins and Daimyo seals together, but each resource track separately.
- Add the categories and apply the tie-breakers if necessary.
