The White Castle: Duel can be played directly from its own box by exactly two people. It is a separate 2025 design from Devir, with lantern token placement and retrieval replacing the original game’s dice and bridges. The White Castle: Matcha is an expansion to the 2023 original, so it is not a component set or extra module for Duel. The shared setting, creators and names make this an easy mistake when looking at store listings.

Can Matcha be used with Duel?

No official compatibility is described in Devir’s product descriptions or the English Duel rulebook. Matcha’s new dice, bridge, geishas, expanded central board and chasen belong to the original dice placement system. Duel has neither dice nor bridges, and its own board, player domains and scoring formulas. Treat a listing that says “The White Castle expansion” as a prompt to check the exact title and required base game. Buying Matcha for a copy of Duel will not give you a playable official expansion.

The identical number of 12 turns can be misleading. Matcha creates twelve actions in the original’s three-round dice system, whereas Duel has six lantern placements followed by six retrievals in two rounds. The similar count does not make the cards, tiles or player boards interchangeable.

Does Duel have a solo mode or expansion?

Devir lists Duel as a two-player product, and its official rulebook explains a two-player contest. As of this check on October 3, 2026, the publisher materials reviewed for this guide do not list an official Duel expansion. The BoardGameGeek files area includes a community-uploaded solo variant called The Shadow Rival; it is identified there as a user contribution rather than a Devir rulebook. If official solo is a priority, the original White Castle product lists one player. Check publisher announcements for anything released after this guide’s verification date.

Choose by the experience you want

If you are buying a game for a fixed pair and want a shorter, direct contest with token stacks and tactical retrievals, Duel is the targeted design. If your group size changes between one and four, or you especially want dice drafting, choose the original. If you already enjoy the original and want its tea-house system and an extra decision each round, Matcha is the expansion route. These are fit considerations derived from rules and player counts, not claims based on hands-on comparative testing.

Existing owners of the original can start Duel without learning the whole original ruleset again. Some names and scoring ideas will be familiar—courtier, gardens and training yard—but the turn order and costs are different. For the actual Duel procedure, use our how-to-play guide. In particular, its outgoing covered-color lantern reward and return-round ability to take an opponent’s token are not instructions for the original.

Questions to check on a product listing

  • Does the box say Duel? Then it is the standalone two-player lantern game.
  • Does it say Matcha? Then it requires the original base game.
  • Does it say only The White Castle? Then it is the original dice game; Devir’s product lists 1–4 players.
  • Does an “expansion” listing include dice and geishas? Those describe Matcha, not a Duel add-on.
