Battleship Strategy: Search Patterns, Hit Follow-Up & Ship Placement
Battleship strategy has two phases: searching efficiently before you know where a ship is, then converting a hit into a sunk ship with minimal wasted shots.
Do not search every square equally
The smallest ship occupies two spaces, so a spaced search pattern can cover the board more efficiently than firing at adjacent unknown squares from the start.
After a hit, determine orientation
Probe orthogonally around a confirmed hit. A second hit establishes whether the ship runs horizontally or vertically, letting you continue along that line.
Use sunk-ship information
Once a ship is sunk, cross off its size mentally. Remaining ship lengths change which empty regions of the board are still plausible.
Vary your own placement
Avoid predictable fleets that cluster ships symmetrically or always favor edges. Mixed orientations and irregular spacing make search patterns less efficient.
In Salvo, protect shot count
Every sunk ship reduces future shots. A damaged fleet that stays afloat still preserves offensive volume, so finishing enemy ships quickly can create a compounding advantage.
