Dune: Imperium Strategy: Agent Tempo, Influence & Combat Timing
Editorial analysis: Dune: Imperium rewards selective commitment. You rarely have enough Agents, troops, resources and Persuasion to contest everything, so strong turns identify which VP route matters now and which tempting reward can be ignored.
Every card has an Agent-vs-Reveal opportunity cost
A card with a strong board icon may also be your best source of Persuasion or swords. Before sending an Agent, look at the hand you would leave for Reveal. Spending the wrong card can turn a good board action into a weak purchase/combat turn.
Faction influence is a VP race, not just a resource track
The early threshold points are reliable, and Alliances can swing between players. Advance where you can realistically defend the Alliance or where the faction reward supports another plan; spreading evenly across all four factions can be inefficient.
Build the economy before the expensive spaces matter
Water opens desert spice, spice buys high-value political/economic actions, and Solari unlocks critical upgrades such as Swordmaster/High Council routes. Ask which resource unlocks your next VP opportunity instead of collecting balanced piles by default.
Fight only the Conflicts worth your troops
Troops in the garrison are flexible; troops committed to a Conflict are spent for that round. A second-place reward can be more efficient than overspending Intrigue cards and troops to turn a modest Conflict into a win.
Deck quality matters more than deck size
Buying a card should improve the frequency of useful Agent icons, Persuasion, swords or faction synergies. Cheap cards that do not improve your future hands dilute the deck. Trashing is valuable when it removes weak starters without costing too much tempo.
Watch the 8–10 VP zone closely
Once players approach 10 VP, hidden Intrigue, faction Alliances and a Conflict reward can end the game. Preserve enough resources to defend or steal a point rather than spending everything on engine growth that will not cycle again.
