Nidavellir Strategy: Bidding, Coin Building & Class Balance
Editorial analysis: Nidavellir is a portfolio-bidding game. Your goal is not to win every tavern; it is to distribute three bids so the whole round improves both army value and future coin strength.
Concede one tavern deliberately
Using the zero coin can be productive when the lost tavern contains a dwarf you can afford to miss and the coin upgrade improves several future rounds.
Do not put your two largest coins into the same strategic purpose
Spread pressure across taverns unless one visible dwarf is uniquely important. A balanced bid portfolio often secures one first choice and one useful second choice rather than overpaying twice.
Recruit Heroes with an end state in mind
Completing all five class ranks is valuable because it unlocks Heroes, but broad diversification can dilute a class-scoring plan. Choose Heroes whose power supports the classes you intend to keep developing.
Class formulas change card value
Hunters and Blacksmiths reward growing rank counts nonlinearly, while Explorers and Warriors care more directly about printed strength. Miners combine value and rank count. Draft accordingly instead of treating all high-number dwarves as equal.
Watch Distinction races near the end of Age I
One dwarf can swing a class majority and secure a Distinction. A modest Age I card can therefore be worth more than a higher-value card in a class whose Distinction you cannot realistically win.
Late Age II: coin upgrades need immediate bidding value
A stronger coin is useful only if enough tavern resolutions remain. Near the end, prioritize the dwarf or Hero that scores now over a coin-building cycle that will not be used.
