Wingspan vs Pocket vs Finspan vs Wyrmspan: Which Should You Choose?
These four Stonemaier engine builders overlap in theme and audience, but they solve very different session needs. Wingspan Pocket is the shortest and lightest; Finspan stays light but offers a fuller personal board; Wingspan is the medium-weight original with the deepest expansion ecosystem; Wyrmspan is the longest and heaviest of the four.
Researched comparison. Checked September 20, 2026 against current Stonemaier Games product information and BoardGame Archive’s game guides. This page compares documented structures rather than ranking the games through a hands-on test. Editorial standards.
The four games at a glance
| Game | Players | Time | Weight | Core engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wingspan Pocket | 1–5 | 25–35 min | Light | One flock row |
| Finspan | 1–5 | 45–60 min | Light | Three ocean zones |
| Wingspan | 1–5 | 40–90 min | Medium | Three habitat rows |
| Wyrmspan | 1–5 | 90 min | Heavy | Three cave systems |
Start with session length, then choose the engine
If your real constraint is time, Wingspan Pocket is the clearest outlier. Its 25–35 minute target is substantially shorter than the other three and its single-row structure keeps the table state compact.
Finspan is the next step up in duration while remaining light. It provides a larger personal board and a progression from fish to eggs, young and schools without moving into Wyrmspan’s heavier rules load.
Wingspan sits in the middle as the medium-weight original. Its forest, grassland and wetland rows specialize different actions, and its major advantage as a product family is compatibility with the main Wingspan expansion line.
Wyrmspan is the deliberate long-session choice. Excavation creates space before dragons can fill it, and exploration makes card order and cave development part of engine activation.
Which is easiest to introduce?
Pocket and Finspan are both classified light by Stonemaier. Pocket is more compressed and has the shortest session, while Finspan gives players more visible board development and scoring categories.
Wingspan is medium weight and asks players to understand three different habitat actions, bird power timing and several scoring categories. Wyrmspan is classified heavy and layers excavation, dragon placement, cave exploration and shared progression together.
Which has the strongest expansion path?
Original Wingspan has the broadest established expansion ecosystem of these four. Pocket is explicitly standalone and its birds are not compatible with original Wingspan. Finspan now has its own expansion line, and Wyrmspan has Dragon Academy.
If your buying decision is primarily about building a collection over time, separate the games by ecosystem rather than assuming the “span” titles share components. They do not form one interchangeable card pool.
