Scrabble Word, Challenge & Exchange Rules Explained
Scrabble requires every complete word formed on a turn to be acceptable under the dictionary or word reference the players agreed to use before play.
How words must be placed
Tiles placed on one turn go in a single horizontal or vertical line. They may connect to existing tiles to form multiple crossing words, but diagonal placement is not legal.
Blank tiles
When you play a blank, declare which letter it represents. It stays that letter for the rest of the game and is worth zero points.
Word restrictions in the boxed rules
The Hasbro instructions exclude words that are always capitalized, abbreviations, stand-alone prefixes and suffixes, and words requiring a hyphen or apostrophe. Players should agree on the dictionary before the game.
Challenges
A word can be challenged before the next player begins a turn. Under the Hasbro instructions used here, an unacceptable word is removed and the player loses that turn; if the word is acceptable, the challenger loses the next turn.
Exchanging tiles
Instead of playing a word, you may exchange some or all rack tiles. Place the exchanged tiles face down, draw the same number, then mix the discarded tiles back into the pool. The exchange uses your turn.
