Jenga Guide: Rules, Block Removal, Tower Setup & Strategy
Jenga
Remove one block at a time from the tower, place it on top, and keep the structure standing longer than everyone else.
Jenga is a physical-dexterity game built from 54 wooden blocks. Every legal move changes the balance of the tower, so the safest block now can create a harder structure for later players.
Why it matters
Jenga has deceptively specific rules about which levels are legal, one-hand play, rebuilding disturbed blocks, completing the top layer and exactly when a turn ends.
Game at a Glance
Wood Blocks
The tower begins as 18 layers of three blocks.
One Hand
Use only one hand while removing and stacking.
Remove Below the Top
Take a block from below the highest completed story.
Turn End
Your turn ends 10 seconds after stacking, or when the next player touches the tower.
Rules overview
On your turn, use one hand to remove one block from below the highest completed story, then place it on top at right angles to the layer beneath. Complete a three-block layer before starting another. If you topple the tower, the previous player to complete a legal stack wins.
Key decisions
Test for loose blocks, avoid destabilizing load-bearing areas and think about the top layer you are creating for the next player. The best move is not always the easiest block to remove.
