Isolated pieces are easier to force into unfavorable jumps. Connected diagonals give you more defensive recapture possibilities.

Because an opponent must jump when a legal capture exists, you can sometimes offer one piece to force their checker onto a square where your next move wins more material or improves your king race.

Value the center

Central pieces generally have more route options than pieces trapped against an edge, making them harder to contain.

Do not empty the back row too early

Leaving promotion squares completely open can make it easier for an opposing man to crown. Back-row control matters, although keeping pieces frozen there forever can also cost mobility.

Trade when the resulting ending favors you

Exchanges are attractive when ahead in material or when they clear a safe path to kinging, but automatic trading can erase positional advantages.
