Azul Floor Line Rules: Penalties, Overflow Tiles & First Player Token
The floor line is Azul’s penalty area. Tiles that cannot legally fit into a pattern line, plus the first-player token, are placed there and reduce your score during wall-tiling.
What goes on the floor line?
- Tiles you take that do not fit into the chosen pattern line
- Tiles you cannot legally place into any pattern line you selected
- The first-player marker when you are the first player to take tiles from the center
Floor line penalty values
From left to right, the standard penalty spaces are:
-1, -1, -2, -2, -2, -3, -3.
What if the floor line is full?
Any additional tiles that would go to the floor are returned to the box lid/supply according to the rules. You do not create extra penalty spaces beyond the printed line.
When do penalties apply?
During the Wall-Tiling phase, subtract the value shown under every occupied floor-line space.
Can your score go below zero?
No. Your score cannot fall below 0.
What happens to floor-line tiles afterward?
After applying penalties, return the colored tiles from your floor line to the box lid. The first-player marker is not discarded; it is placed in front of you so you start the next round.
Does the first-player token count as a penalty?
Yes. It occupies a floor-line space and therefore contributes the printed negative value of that position.
