Monopoly Jail, Free Parking & Mortgage Rules
Several of Monopoly’s best-known “rules” are actually house rules. Standard Monopoly treats Free Parking as a neutral space; the tax-and-fee jackpot is not part of the classic base rules.
How do you get out of Jail?
Use a Get Out of Jail Free card, pay the required fine under the rulebook, or attempt to roll doubles within the allowed jail turns.
Can you collect rent while in Jail?
Yes. Standard Jail restricts your movement, not your ability to own, trade and collect property income.
What does Free Parking do?
Nothing in standard classic Monopoly. You simply land there safely. Hasbro has explicitly described the jackpot version as a popular house rule.
How do mortgages work?
Mortgage a property to the Bank for the mortgage value on its deed after meeting any building restrictions. A mortgaged property does not collect rent while mortgaged.
Can you build when a property in the group is mortgaged?
No. Houses/hotels require the color group to satisfy the normal unmortgaged building conditions.
