Monopoly Starting Money & Auction Rules Explained
Classic Monopoly gives every player $1,500 at setup. One of the most commonly missed official rules is that an unowned property does not simply remain available when a player declines it—it goes to auction.
How much money does each player start with?
$1,500 in the standard classic game.
What happens when you land on unowned property?
You may buy it from the Bank at the printed price.
What if you do not buy it?
The Banker auctions it to the highest bidder.
Can the player who declined it bid?
Yes. Declining the printed price does not exclude that player from the auction.
Does an auction start at the printed property price?
No. The auction is an open bidding process; the official rule does not require bidding to begin at the printed purchase price.
Why this matters
Skipping auctions is a common house rule that changes the economy and usually lengthens the game because fewer properties enter player hands.
