Sheriff of Nottingham Inspection & Scoring Rules Explained
Inspection determines who pays whom. Final scoring then rewards coins, successfully delivered goods and legal-good majorities.
If the Sheriff lets the bag pass
The merchant opens the bag after the decision and places the successfully delivered goods in the appropriate area of their stand. Any accepted bribe is paid as agreed under the rules.
If the Sheriff inspects
Reveal the contents and compare every card with the legal declaration. Correctly declared legal goods remain with the merchant. Goods that did not match the declaration are confiscated and discarded/returned according to the 2nd Edition procedure.
False goods cost the merchant penalties
For confiscated cards, the merchant pays the Sheriff the penalty printed for those goods. Contraband generally creates larger risk because its reward and penalty are both higher.
Truthful legal goods can cost the Sheriff
If the Sheriff inspected goods that matched the declaration, the Sheriff compensates the merchant using the printed legal-good penalty values. This is the cost of an incorrect suspicion.
Final goods value
Add the value of legal and contraband goods that successfully reached your merchant stand. Use each card’s printed value and resolve any special 2nd Edition module effects only if those modules were included.
King and Queen bonuses
For each standard legal-good type, compare how many qualifying goods each merchant delivered. Award the King and Queen majority bonuses using the rulebook’s values and tie handling.
Add remaining coins
Coins are part of final wealth. Add them to delivered-good value and majority bonuses. Highest total wins.
