Betrayal at House on the Hill Strategy: Explore, Group & Adapt

Editorial analysis: Betrayal is scenario-driven, so there is no universal winning engine. Good play before the haunt is mostly about preserving options for an objective you do not know yet.

Explore without scattering across the whole house

New rooms are useful, but a party spread across distant floors can lose several turns regrouping after the haunt reveals a shared objective in one area.

Keep important items mobile

Before the haunt, trade or position useful Items so the group can transfer them quickly. A strong weapon on a low-Might explorer or mobility item on the wrong floor may become awkward later.

Protect dangerously low traits

Repeatedly taking a character near a skull space reduces post-haunt resilience. When two exploration routes are similar, prefer the one that does not risk the trait your character relies on most.

Remember map bottlenecks

Stairs, special movement rooms and narrow connectors become tactically important after the haunt. Knowing the fastest cross-floor routes can matter more than remembering every Event card.

After the haunt, relearn the game

Do not keep exploring automatically. Read the victory boxes, identify the actual win action and work backward from it. Many haunts punish players who spend turns on normal room discovery instead of the scenario objective.

Information asymmetry is intentional

Heroes and traitor often have different rules knowledge. Do not infer that the other side made a mistake merely because their action looks strange; it may be driven by text you are not allowed to read.
