Eldritch Horror Strategy: Mysteries, Doom & Investigator Roles
Editorial analysis: Eldritch Horror is a prioritization game. The board produces more problems than the team can solve, so winning means identifying which threats directly block Mystery progress or accelerate defeat.
Assign investigators by strength
A high-Influence investigator should often handle asset acquisition; strong combat investigators can manage monsters; mobile or clue-efficient investigators should chase Mystery requirements. Avoid sending everyone to the same problem unless the objective demands it.
Mystery progress outranks cosmetic board cleanup
Closing every Gate or defeating every Monster is usually impossible. Address a threat when it advances Doom, blocks travel, threatens a loss condition or supplies something the current Mystery needs.
Clues are strategic currency
Clues can advance Mysteries, close Gates, reroll tests or resolve Rumors depending on current cards. Do not spend them casually if the active Mystery has an explicit clue requirement.
Concentrate useful Assets
Trading lets the team put weapons, rerolls and skill bonuses on the investigator most likely to use them repeatedly. A mediocre item on the right investigator can outperform a strong item left in the wrong role.
Rumors need a deadline calculation
Some Rumors are ignorable for a few rounds; others create a catastrophic timer. Read the exact consequence and decide how many actions the team can afford before committing a specialist to it.
As Doom falls, stop building long engines
Late assets and travel setups have fewer rounds to repay. Shift toward direct Mystery resolution, Doom protection and surviving the Ancient One’s awakening if it becomes unavoidable.
