Frosthaven Strategy: Hand Stamina, Loot & Outpost Planning
Editorial analysis: Frosthaven asks you to optimize two connected economies: the limited hand of cards inside a scenario and the limited materials/time of the outpost between scenarios. Strong play converts both into progress without exhausting either too early.
Spend lost cards only when they change the scenario
A lost-card action removes future turns. Use it when the effect prevents a collapse, secures an objective, clears a dangerous room or creates enough tempo to justify the shortened hand—not merely because its printed numbers are large.
Use initiative to control when enemies commit
Late initiative can let monsters advance into your attack range; early initiative on the next round can let you act before they retaliate. Think in two-round sequences rather than always selecting the lowest number available.
Loot deliberately, not automatically
Frosthaven makes loot strategically important because materials and herbs influence crafting and settlement growth. Still, an extra loot action is poor value if it causes scenario failure. Prioritize tokens whose campaign value is high and whose collection fits the route you already need.
Open new rooms when the party can absorb the tempo spike
New rooms can reveal multiple monsters and change line-of-sight pressure immediately. Avoid opening with several characters already spent for the round or with the door-opener unable to retreat from a dangerous tile.
Scenario objectives outrank optional experience
Experience, loot and battle goals matter, but the campaign advances through successful scenarios. Once the objective is within reach, avoid extra fights or detours that increase exhaustion risk without improving completion odds.
Craft for repeated value, not one attractive item
Materials used on one craft or building are unavailable elsewhere. Favor items and upgrades that solve recurring class or party problems, especially if they reduce future resource pressure or improve scenario consistency.
Plan buildings around campaign bottlenecks
Outpost buildings unlock services, recipes, resources and progression. A building is strongest when it fixes a limitation the party repeatedly feels rather than merely offering a small benefit in an area already covered.
Calendar timing changes the value of “later”
Frosthaven schedules some campaign effects for future weeks. When multiple objectives compete, remember that advancing time can trigger events or unlock consequences even if the party would prefer to postpone them indefinitely.
