Scythe Factions & Player Mats: Abilities, Banned Combos & Pairings
Scythe combines two independent sources of asymmetry: a Faction Mat and a Player Mat. The faction determines your special ability, home base and mech abilities; the Player Mat determines the arrangement and economy of the four action sections.
Quick answer: base Scythe includes five factions—Rusviet, Crimea, Nordic, Polania and Saxony. Invaders from Afar adds Albion and Togawa plus additional Player Mats. Current Stonemaier guidance bans Rusviet–Industrial and Crimea–Patriotic because those pairings are too powerful, apart from the publisher’s stated first-game exception for completely new players.
Faction Mat vs Player Mat
| Component | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Faction Mat | Faction ability, home base, mech abilities, starting power/combat information and faction pieces. |
| Player Mat | Four action sections, top/bottom pairings, costs, benefits, upgrades, starting popularity, coins and objectives. |
A faction is therefore not a complete strategy by itself. The same faction can feel different with a different Player Mat because the action pairings and economic costs change.
The five base-game Scythe factions
Rusviet — Relentless
Rusviet may normally choose the same Player Mat section on consecutive turns, breaking the standard restriction that forces other factions to move their action token to a different section. Current errata limits how this interacts with the Factory card: do not use Relentless to repeat a Factory card on consecutive turns.
Crimea — Coercion
Crimea may spend one combat card per turn as if it were one resource. That flexibility can smooth resource costs, but combat cards still have their normal value in combat and no endgame coin value simply for being held.
Nordic — Swim
Nordic workers can move across rivers under the faction ability. This changes early worker access compared with factions whose workers wait for other movement options.
Polania — Meander
Polania can choose up to two options when resolving an encounter rather than the standard single option. That makes encounter positioning especially relevant for the faction.
Saxony — Dominate
Saxony is not bound by the normal limits on stars from objectives and combat victories. This changes which Triumph Track achievements can contribute repeatedly to a six-star finish.
Albion and Togawa
Invaders from Afar adds Albion and Togawa, along with the pieces and mats needed to support six- and seven-player Scythe. These factions have their own movement and map-control identities and should be learned from the expansion rulebook rather than assumed to follow a base faction’s ability set.
What the Player Mat changes
Every Player Mat has the same four top-row action types—Move/Gain, Bolster, Trade and Produce—and the same four bottom-row development types—Upgrade, Deploy, Build and Enlist—but their pairings and printed costs/benefits differ.
This is why opening sequences should be evaluated by faction + Player Mat, not faction alone. A resource that is easy for your faction to reach is more valuable when it pays for a bottom action paired with a useful top action.
Officially banned Scythe combinations
| Combination | Current guidance |
|---|---|
| Rusviet + Industrial | Banned by current publisher FAQ because of its power; see the FAQ for the stated new-player exception. |
| Crimea + Patriotic | Banned by current publisher FAQ because of its power; see the FAQ for the stated new-player exception. |
If you randomize factions and Player Mats, check these combinations before finishing setup. Do not infer additional bans from community rankings or tournament house rules unless your group has deliberately adopted them.
How to think about a faction–mat pairing
Instead of asking which faction is universally strongest, ask four concrete questions:
- Which resources can this faction reach efficiently from its home area?
- Which bottom-row actions does the Player Mat make cheap enough to repeat?
- Which top action naturally supplies the next bottom action?
- How quickly can the combination turn development into stars, territory, popularity-adjusted scoring and coins?
This approach is more useful than a blanket ranking because Scythe’s scoring, player count, opponents and map pressure all affect the value of an opening.
Faction rules that commonly cause mistakes
Rusviet and the Factory
Relentless does not override the current erratum preventing consecutive Factory-card use.
Faction ability vs mech ability
The faction ability printed on the mat is separate from mech abilities. Mech abilities become available when the corresponding mech is deployed.
Expansion factions
Albion and Togawa require their expansion rules. Do not treat them as reskinned base factions.
