Carcassonne Traders & Builders Expansion Guide

Carcassonne: Traders & Builders adds three systems to the base game: Goods tokens, Builders and Pigs. Together they increase tactical tile placement, feature development and farmer scoring.

What Traders & Builders adds

  • 24 Land tiles
  • 20 Goods tokens: Wine, Grain and Cloth
  • 6 Builders
  • 6 Pigs
  • A cloth tile bag

Goods tokens

Some new city tiles show Wine, Grain or Cloth. When a city containing Goods symbols is completed, the player who completed the city takes the matching Goods tokens—even if another player controls and scores the city.

At the end of the game, majorities in the three Goods types award bonus points, creating a reason to finish an opponent’s city at the right time.

Builders

A Builder is placed on a road or city where you already have a follower. When you extend that feature with a tile, the Builder can let you take an additional tile-placement turn according to the expansion rules.

This accelerates development and makes long roads or cities more tactically active.

Pigs

A Pig is placed in a field where you already have a farmer. It increases the end-game value of that farmer’s field if you control the field.

New landscape tiles

The 24 Land tiles include new layouts, including roads that cross via bridges without forming junctions. That creates longer route possibilities and less predictable field geometry.

Can it combine with other Carcassonne expansions?

Yes. Z-Man’s rules state that Traders & Builders can be integrated fully or partially and combined with other Carcassonne expansions.

Who should add Traders & Builders?

It is an excellent second expansion after Inns & Cathedrals. Inns raises the value and risk of familiar features; Traders & Builders adds more active tactical systems and end-game majority scoring.
