Gothic: A Shadow’s Quest
Explore the Valley of Mines before the Nameless Hero arrives, develop a Shadow or Fire Mage Novice, complete branching quests and survive a cooperative RPG campaign inspired by the cult Gothic videogame.
Gothic: A Shadow’s Quest is THQ Nordic’s cooperative adventure board game based on Piranha Bytes’ cult RPG. One to four players explore the Valley of Mines as aspiring members of the Old Camp, developing characters through quests, equipment, attributes and combat. An optional additional participant can take the role of Game Master.
The project returned to Gamefound on September 30, 2026 after THQ Nordic cancelled its earlier 2025 campaign to redesign the game. The new campaign is scheduled to close on October 23, 2026, with fulfillment currently estimated for September 2027.
Why it stands out
The design tries to reproduce Gothic’s RPG loop rather than simply using the setting for combat scenarios. You return to the Old Camp to improve attributes and skills, buy equipment and replenish supplies, then head into branching journeys that lead toward quest-specific final encounters.
Why this has strong search potential
Gothic has a much larger audience than most new hobby board games, and the campaign follows the 2026 videogame remake. Search intent is spread across the board game itself, the Gamefound relaunch, pledge differences, miniature content, solo play, campaign structure, release date and the question of whether the game will ever reach retail.
That makes it a useful evergreen hub even after crowdfunding ends, because buyers will still need edition, fulfillment and second-hand information later.

How Gothic: A Shadow’s Quest works
A Shadow’s Quest is an adventure RPG rather than a traditional one-room dungeon crawler. The publisher describes the game around a repeating cycle of quests, exploration, experience, equipment and character improvement.
Your group starts from the Old Camp, prepares for a quest and then travels across a sequence of location cards. Those locations can introduce enemies, allies, treasure, hunting opportunities and other encounters before the quest reaches its Final Encounter.
Choices made during quests can change later passages and campaign outcomes, which is why THQ Nordic emphasizes the campaign book and branching narrative as core components rather than flavor text around battles.
The three-part core loop
1. Old Camp
The Old Camp functions as the hub. Players can improve their Shadows, buy and sell equipment and restore supplies. Completing quests for NPCs can unlock bonuses, training opportunities or additional goods.
2. Journey
The Journey is the exploration phase. Quest routes are represented through cards, and each area can present different opportunities or threats. You may meet characters, find treasure, hunt, fight or be pursued.
3. Final Encounter
The Final Encounter is the quest climax. THQ Nordic has said this is not restricted to combat: objectives can include puzzles, protection or other scenario-specific challenges.
Campaign mode and sandbox play
The game includes a narrative campaign and a separate sandbox-style way to play for a single evening.
THQ Nordic previously estimated a sandbox session at roughly three hours, with experienced players potentially finishing more quickly or deliberately extending the session to collect additional loot or increase the difficulty of later encounters.
The publisher has not committed to a fixed total campaign playtime because the story has continued to be written and tested during development.
Is this the story of Gothic 1?
No. The board game is set several years before the arrival of the Nameless Hero.
The campaign begins around the Old Camp and covers areas including the Valley of Mines and the Old Mine. That gives the designers room to tell a new story without asking fans to replay the exact plot of the original videogame.
This also means familiarity with Gothic 1 is helpful for recognizing people, places and atmosphere but is not required to understand the board game’s basic premise.
Characters and progression
Players take the role of Shadows from the Old Camp, with the redesigned edition also adding a Fire Mage Novice as a fifth hero character across all editions.
Progression mirrors the videogame concept: complete quests, gain access to skills and attributes, acquire better equipment and become capable of surviving threats that were too dangerous earlier.
The available development paths include melee combat, bows and magic, allowing players to build characters around different approaches rather than using identical adventurers.
How combat works
The current game uses dice-based combat and character abilities. The redesigned 2026 version moved to a d12-based system as part of the broader mechanical overhaul after the cancelled campaign.
Combat is only one part of the adventure structure. The publisher has specifically said it does not want the design reduced to a sequence of dungeon fights, and the campaign includes decisions, interactions and non-combat quest outcomes.
Because balancing is still underway, exact combat values and edge cases should be checked against the final rulebook once production locks.
Can Gothic: A Shadow’s Quest be played solo?
Yes. The board game supports solo play as well as cooperative play with up to four adventurers.
An optional additional person can act as Game Master. That role is not required for the standard cooperative or solo modes.
This distinction matters when reading player counts: the playable party is 1–4 characters, while a table can include another participant if the optional GM system is used.
What does the optional Game Master add?
The campaign offers a dedicated Game Master screen as an add-on, confirming support for a human GM role alongside the regular automated cooperative structure.
The optional nature of the role means groups do not need someone to permanently sit outside the adventuring party in order to play.
Full GM procedures should be judged from the final rules rather than prototype material, because THQ Nordic is still developing and balancing the game.
Gothic board game editions compared
| Edition | Campaign price | Main difference |
|---|---|---|
| Campfire Edition | €80 | Complete game using cardboard figures on plastic stands and a functional insert |
| Old Camp Edition | €110 | Deluxe presentation with acrylic standees and improved storage/inserts |
| Ore Baron Edition | €199 | Ultimate version with the game’s full miniature treatment |
| All-In Edition | €249 | Ultimate-level game plus campaign add-ons bundled together |
The important point is that the €80 Campfire Edition is described by THQ Nordic as the complete game. The more expensive versions primarily change presentation, components and included extras rather than withholding the campaign itself.
How many miniatures are in the Ultimate edition?
The standalone Miniature Set contains 107 miniatures and is priced at €110 during the campaign.
The Ore Baron Edition is the main pledge for buyers who want the miniatures integrated into the complete game rather than purchasing the miniature pack separately.
THQ Nordic reduced the announced price of the miniature-heavy editions immediately before launch after recalculating production costs and removing earlier safety buffers.
What is the All-In Edition?
The All-In pledge is currently listed at €249 and is intended for backers who want the premium game plus the campaign’s accessory bundle.
Separate listed add-ons include a dice tray, dice cup, black or blue Gothic dice, Game Master screen and a 650-piece sleeve pack.
For players interested only in gameplay, the lower tiers are therefore much easier to justify than an automatic jump to All-In.
What do the stretch goals add?
The relaunch uses stretch goals to add a mixture of gameplay and presentation content. Current unlocked examples include new abilities such as Swimming and Magic Mastery, plus other component and encounter additions.
THQ Nordic has said many unlocked goals will appear in the Standard Edition, most in Deluxe and all in Ultimate.
Because the campaign is still live, the final stretch-goal list should not be treated as complete until funding closes.
Why was the first Gothic board game campaign cancelled?
The first Gamefound campaign launched in 2025 and had already raised more than €166,000 before THQ Nordic cancelled it.
The publisher said it believed the game needed fundamental improvement and later reworked both presentation and mechanics. Reported changes include reducing the card count from more than 1,000 to a little over 400, moving much narrative/event content into a book, introducing d12-based combat and continuing to revise character development.
The current 2026 campaign is therefore a relaunch of a substantially revised project, not simply the old campaign reopened with a new funding target.
Will Gothic: A Shadow’s Quest come to retail?
THQ Nordic currently says no. The company has stated that the game is being offered exclusively through its Gamefound campaign and that there will not be later retail distribution.
This is one of the most consequential campaign details for buyers. Waiting for normal store release may not be an option unless THQ Nordic changes that policy later.
Copies could still appear on the secondary market after fulfillment, but that is different from an official retail edition.
What languages will the game support?
The physical campaign focuses on the supported printed language editions listed by THQ Nordic. The publisher has also committed to providing the manual and campaign book as free PDF downloads in Italian, Spanish and Czech before release.
That is useful for buyers who want translated narrative support but should not be confused with a promise that every physical card and component will be printed in those languages.
Gothic board game release date and delivery
The current Gamefound rewards show an estimated delivery of September 2027.
The live campaign runs from September 30 through October 23, 2026. As with any crowdfunded game, the delivery month is an estimate rather than a guaranteed release date.
The final campaign story and some gameplay systems are still being refined, so development risk should be considered alongside manufacturing and freight risk.
How successful is the 2026 relaunch?
The campaign passed its €75,000 funding goal quickly and exceeded €320,000 within its first few days.
By October 7 the live Gamefound page was showing funding above €450,000 with numerous stretch goals already unlocked.
That demonstrates strong demand, particularly from fans of the videogame, but crowdfunding totals should not be treated as evidence that the finished board game will necessarily play well.
How closely does it follow the Gothic videogame?
The board game uses the same Valley of Mines setting and deliberately copies the videogame’s progression rhythm: accept quests, explore, survive fights, earn better equipment and return later to threats that were previously too dangerous.
However, the story is original and set before Gothic 1. Players do not control the Nameless Hero.
THQ Nordic has also said developers connected with the Gothic 1 Remake provided creative input intended to keep the tabletop adaptation consistent with the world and tone.
Gothic compared with other adventure board games
| Game | Shared appeal | Main difference |
|---|---|---|
| Kingdom Come: Deliverance – The Board Game | Videogame adaptation, quests and character-driven adventure | Kingdom Come focuses on historical Bohemia; Gothic uses fantasy progression and the Valley of Mines. |
| Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion | Cooperative campaign progression | Gloomhaven is tactical card-driven combat; Gothic emphasizes RPG exploration, equipment and branching quests. |
| Mansions of Madness: Second Edition | Scenario exploration and narrative encounters | Mansions is app-driven horror investigation; Gothic is a persistent fantasy RPG campaign. |
| Nemesis: Legacy | Large narrative campaign and character development | Nemesis emphasizes sci-fi survival horror; Gothic follows an open-world fantasy-RPG structure. |
Who may like Gothic: A Shadow’s Quest?
The obvious audience is fans of Gothic who want a campaign that explores familiar locations without simply retelling Gothic 1.
It may also suit groups that prefer adventure, equipment and narrative decisions over a campaign made almost entirely of tactical combat scenarios.
It may be less suitable if you want a short game, dislike crowdfunding uncertainty or prefer finished retail products with extensive post-release reviews before buying.

- Solo is officially supported. A Game Master is optional rather than mandatory.
- The story is a prequel. You are not replaying Gothic 1 as the Nameless Hero.
- THQ Nordic says there will be no later retail release.
- September 2027 is an estimate. The campaign and some systems are still in development.
