The Lord of the Rings: The King’s Gambit

Fight across Minas Tirith, Pelennor Fields, Pelargir and Mordor at the same time in Restoration Games’ reimagining of the cult classic Star Wars: The Queen’s Gambit.

♟1–4 Players ◷90–120 Minutes ▣2027 Retail ⚙Medium–Heavy ◆Card-Driven Multi-Front Battle

The Lord of the Rings: The King’s Gambit is one of the highest-profile tabletop projects currently in development. Restoration Games and Space Cowboys are rebuilding the structure of the sought-after 2000 game Star Wars: The Queen’s Gambit around the climactic battles of Tolkien’s trilogy.

The deluxe crowdfunding campaign is live from September 29 to October 20, 2026. A standard worldwide retail edition from Space Cowboys and Asmodee is planned for 2027, so backing the campaign is not the only way to eventually buy the game.

Why it stands out

The King’s Gambit does not isolate one famous battle. Players must manage several decisive conflicts simultaneously, and success on one front can create opportunities—or leave dangerous weaknesses—elsewhere. The tension comes from dividing attention across multiple battlefields rather than solving one tactical board at a time.

Why this game is likely to attract unusually high search interest

The project combines three strong audiences: The Lord of the Rings, the collector reputation of Star Wars: The Queen’s Gambit, and Restoration Games’ modernized “grail game” approach. It is also currently near the top of BoardGameGeek Hotness and has accumulated roughly 1,200 BGG wishlists before release.

That makes search demand broader than a typical new euro: people may search by franchise, Kickstarter edition, Queen’s Gambit comparison, retail availability, player count or the enormous deluxe production.

⚔

Fight on Multiple Fronts

Minas Tirith, Pelennor Fields, Pelargir and Mordor all demand attention.

Play Cards Strategically

Card choices determine where you commit actions, pressure and resources.

🎲

Accept Battle Risk

Dice add uncertainty to a game where timing and allocation already create tension.

Exploit Connected Victories

Success on one front can change what becomes possible elsewhere.

How The King’s Gambit works

Restoration Games describes The King’s Gambit as a sprawling battle fought across multiple fronts at the same time. Players commit forces, play cards and roll dice while trying to prevent one battlefield from collapsing as they pursue opportunities elsewhere.

The design is card-driven rather than a conventional move-every-unit war game. The important strategic problem is allocation: which front deserves your best cards, where can you accept risk, and when does one battlefield need immediate reinforcement?

This hub intentionally stays at system level while the game is still in crowdfunding/pre-release status. Exact final rules, card interactions and scenario procedures may still receive production clarification.

The four major battlefronts

Minas Tirith

Gondor attempts to withstand the forces of Shadow as the city becomes one of the central defensive fronts.

Pelennor Fields

The Riders of Rohan arrive into the wider battle, creating another large-scale conflict that must be coordinated with the defense of the city.

Pelargir

Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli fight through Haradrim at the Great Port, trying to create reinforcements for the larger war.

Mordor

Frodo and Sam continue toward Mount Doom while the military battles rage elsewhere.

The key design idea is simultaneity: these are not four unrelated scenarios played one after another. The experience is built around managing them together.

Why dividing attention is the core strategic problem

Restoration Games explicitly says a victory on one front can create new opportunities elsewhere, while leaving another battlefield undefended can have serious consequences.

Illustrative analysis: if a strong card can secure a nearly won front or merely stabilize a collapsing one, the obvious “win now” choice may still be wrong if the neglected front creates a larger strategic loss.

This is the kind of decision that gives the game its identity. The strongest move is not always the one that produces the biggest immediate result; it may be the move that prevents your whole multi-front position from becoming unbalanced.

How is The King’s Gambit related to Star Wars: The Queen’s Gambit?

The King’s Gambit officially reimplements Star Wars: The Queen’s Gambit, the 2000 multi-board battle game that became expensive and difficult to obtain on the secondary market.

Restoration Games co-founder Justin Jacobson has said reviving The Queen’s Gambit was one of the earliest games he wanted the company to tackle. The Lord of the Rings eventually provided the setting that matched the scale of the original concept.

This is not a straight licensed reprint. Restoration and Space Cowboys are treating it as a modernized redesign with new balancing, new presentation and a Tolkien-specific mapping of the multi-front structure.

Does The King’s Gambit support solo play?

BoardGameGeek currently lists the game for 1–4 players, indicating official one-player support in the current product scope.

Because the game is still unreleased, this page does not describe the exact solo procedure or claim a best player count. Those details should be revisited once final rules and wider post-release play data are available.

How long does The King’s Gambit take?

Current BGG/product media listings place the game at roughly 90–120 minutes.

That puts it far below the typical full-session commitment of War of the Ring: Second Edition, while still giving The King’s Gambit room for a large thematic battle.

Limited vs Mithril vs 2027 retail edition

There are three buying paths that should not be confused.

EditionAvailabilityMain difference
Limited Edition2026 Kickstarter onlyDeluxe campaign production with large boards, 3D Minas Tirith/Mordor and 150+ miniatures.
Mithril Edition2026 Kickstarter; extremely limited later stockAdds bonus miniatures, upgraded dice/tokens, sleeves/racks, foil treatments and other premium extras.
Standard RetailWorldwide in 2027Space Cowboys / Asmodee retail edition; same game concept without the campaign’s extreme deluxe production.

Restoration Games says both crowdfunding editions include the large 3D structures. The Limited Edition is campaign-only, while only a very small quantity of Mithril copies may remain afterward and will not enter normal distribution.

How much does the Kickstarter cost?

The active campaign offers two principal pledge levels: approximately $199 for the Limited Edition and $499 for the Mithril Edition.

Those prices are for premium campaign editions, not the future 2027 retail edition. The eventual worldwide retail price should be evaluated separately when Space Cowboys publishes final retail details.

Should you back the Kickstarter or wait for retail?

Back now if the oversized 3D structures, 150+ miniatures and limited collector production are central to why you want the game.

Wait for 2027 retail if you mainly want to play The King’s Gambit and do not need the largest premium components. Restoration Games and Space Cowboys have already confirmed that a standard retail edition is planned for worldwide distribution.

The important buyer mistake to avoid is assuming Kickstarter is the only route to the game. It is the only route to the campaign-specific Limited Edition, not the only route to the underlying design.

When does the Kickstarter end?

The crowdfunding campaign began on September 29, 2026 and is scheduled to end on October 20, 2026.

Because the campaign is live, funding totals, stretch information and fulfillment details can continue to change. This page therefore treats campaign figures as dated snapshots rather than permanent game facts.

Why the deluxe production is unusual

Both campaign editions use more than 150 sculpted miniatures and large plastic three-dimensional versions of Minas Tirith and Mordor at opposite ends of the play area.

Restoration says the structures are not purely decorative; they are playable regions integrated into the game.

The Mithril Edition then adds another layer of premium components such as alternate/bonus miniatures, upgraded dice and tokens, custom sleeves and racks, foil treatments and other extras.

What do we know about the 2027 retail edition?

Space Cowboys will publish the standard retail version, and Asmodee will distribute it worldwide through its international network.

Restoration’s March announcement says the retail edition will retain the same striking art and gameplay. The final retail component breakdown and price should not be assumed to match the crowdfunding editions.

Which Lord of the Rings board game is closest?

GameShared appealMain difference
War of the Ring: Second EditionEpic conflict across Middle-earthWar of the Ring is a much longer strategic war game; King’s Gambit is a more focused multi-front battle.
Fate of the FellowshipLarge cooperative Tolkien adventureFate is cooperative; King’s Gambit is built around opposing forces and battlefront pressure.
Duel for Middle-earthCompetitive Tolkien strategyDuel is a compact 30-minute two-player card/board duel; King’s Gambit is a much larger miniature battle.
Fellowship Trick-Taking GameBook-based Tolkien adaptationFellowship is cooperative trick-taking; King’s Gambit emphasizes simultaneous physical battlefronts.

Who it may suit

The King’s Gambit may suit Tolkien fans who want a visually dramatic battle game but do not necessarily want the all-evening commitment of War of the Ring.

It may also appeal strongly to collectors who remember The Queen’s Gambit and have been waiting for a modern reimplementation.

It may be a poor fit if you want a compact box, low table-space demands, minimal dice uncertainty or a finished retail product immediately.

Four buying mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming Kickstarter is the only edition. A standard Space Cowboys retail edition is planned for 2027.
  • Assuming Limited and Mithril are different games. The main difference is production and premium content, not a completely different rules system.
  • Buying for a small table without checking dimensions later. The campaign version is intentionally enormous.
  • Treating current campaign details as permanent retail facts. Pledge prices and deluxe components do not automatically define the 2027 retail edition.
