Mechs vs. Minions

Draft command cards, program a six-slot mech, watch it execute exactly what you told it to do, then deal with the consequences in Riot Games’ cooperative League of Legends campaign game — now returning in new 2026 editions.

♟2–4 Players ◷60–120 Minutes ▣10-Mission Campaign ⚙Programming + Drafting ◆2026 Relaunch

Mechs vs. Minions is a cooperative programming game originally released by Riot Games in 2016. Players control Corki, Heimerdinger, Tristana and Ziggs as they draft commands and gradually build increasingly complicated six-slot programs for their mechs.

The game has remained highly regarded despite being out of print since 2020. BoardGameGeek currently ranks it around #93 overall, with more than 18,500 ratings and an average just under 8.0. In 2026, Riot partnered with Incredible Dream Studios to bring it back in two editions for its tenth anniversary.

Why it stands out

You do not choose every movement individually. Instead, you build a program that your mech must execute in order. A command that was perfect when you drafted it can become hilariously wrong after another mech pushes you, Minions move or damage corrupts one of your command slots.

Why this is a strong organic-search opportunity

Mechs vs. Minions now combines proven evergreen demand with a fresh 2026 relaunch. The game was unavailable for years, so the new editions create strong buying-intent searches on top of the existing rules and campaign searches.

The most useful search targets include how to play, command-line rules, drafting, power levels, damage, Minion movement, Team Gears, Overdrive, Schematics, campaign missions, solo mode, reprint status, Bandle City Edition vs Classic Edition, 2026 release date and whether League of Legends knowledge is required.

Game at a Glance

1

Draft a Command

Choose from a shared row of movement, turning and attack cards under time pressure.

6

Program the Mech

Place commands into one of six fixed command-line slots or scrap them for special effects.

▶

Execute Everything

Your mech runs every programmed slot in order, even when the board has changed since you planned it.

★

Complete the Mission

Each mission introduces different objectives, board setups, dangers and unlocks.

How Mechs vs. Minions works

A normal round begins with the players drafting Command cards from a shared display.

Each player then programs drafted cards into their personal six-slot Command Line. Once programming is complete, every mech executes its entire line from slot 1 through slot 6.

The Minions then take their phase, moving, spawning and damaging adjacent mechs according to the current mission rules. Some missions add a further Danger Phase for hazards or bosses.

The campaign gradually introduces new mechanisms rather than teaching the entire system before Mission 1.

How the six-slot Command Line works

Each mech has six numbered command slots.

When you program a Command card into a slot, it remains there across rounds. During execution, the mech resolves every active command from slot 1 to slot 6 in order.

This means your program becomes longer and more powerful over time — but also harder to control.

Cards cannot simply be picked up and rearranged whenever you want. Reprogramming requires specific scrap effects or mission rules.

Move, Turn and Attack commands

There are three broad command functions:

  • Move — sends the mech forward or, for certain cards, sideways.
  • Turn — rotates the mech before later commands execute.
  • Attack — damages Minions or mission targets without moving the mech.

A command may combine more than one effect, which is why orientation matters. A perfect attack pointed in the wrong direction can accomplish nothing.

How the shared draft works

The First Player normally reveals five Command cards.

Players draft one at a time until four cards have been selected. At four players, everybody receives one card. With fewer players, some players receive more than one.

After the tutorial, the first draft of a mission is normally a Double Draft: ten cards are revealed and every player receives two.

The draft is cooperative, but scarcity still matters. The card that best fixes your command line may also be exactly what another player needs.

Why drafting becomes timed

After the introductory material, Mechs vs. Minions adds a timer to the drafting stage.

Players must select cards before Zhonya’s Minuteglass runs out. If the timer expires before the draft is complete, remaining cards are assigned randomly according to the rules.

The timer applies to choosing cards, not to the later programming discussion.

This prevents perfect-information analysis from slowing every round to a crawl.

How command power levels work

Commands belong to four colored elements.

If a new card is placed on top of a command of the same element in the same slot, that slot’s Power increases rather than replacing the old card completely.

Higher Power generally makes the programmed command stronger.

This creates another programming trade-off: spread commands across the line for flexibility, or stack compatible colors to create a few extremely powerful slots.

Programming vs scrapping cards

A drafted card does not always have to enter your Command Line.

Cards can be scrapped immediately for one of two broad benefits:

  • Fire or Metal cards can repair damage.
  • Electric or Computery cards can reprogram the Command Line by swapping two undamaged slots.

That makes an apparently unwanted draft card potentially valuable as a repair or programming tool.

Why execution creates the chaos

Once programming ends, the first player executes every active command in order, then the next player does the same.

The crucial rule is that the command line is mandatory. You do not normally get to skip a command just because the board changed.

One mech can push another, Minions may move between turns and mission objects can shift. The second or third mech may therefore execute a plan that no longer matches the board state.

This is where most of the game’s comedy and tactical improvisation comes from.

Can mechs push each other?

Yes. If a mech moves into another mech and there is space beyond it, the moving mech can push the other one.

That can be useful for teamwork, but it can also ruin the pushed mech’s later programmed directions.

Mechs do not damage one another with normal attacks, so accidental friendly fire is much less dangerous than accidental friendly movement.

How Minions work

Minions are deliberately fragile: one point of damage defeats one Minion.

A mech can also destroy a Minion by moving onto its space and stomping it.

What changes from mission to mission is how Minions move and spawn. The tutorial uses simple directional movement; later missions give them objective-specific behavior.

That lets the same basic enemy pieces support several different puzzles.

How damage can corrupt your program

Damage is more interesting than simply losing health.

Different Damage cards can create immediate glitches, persistent system problems or directly damage a Command Line slot.

Slot Damage can disable the programmed card underneath and replace normal behavior with the damage-card instruction.

A carefully constructed program can therefore become unpredictable after one bad Minion phase.

Team Gears and Overdrive

Defeating Minions earns progress toward shared Team Gears.

In the standard system, every fifth Minion kill awards a Team Gear. The team’s gear level resets at the start of each mission.

At maximum power — 15 Team Gears — every mech unlocks its Overdrive ability.

This rewards the team for clearing Minions efficiently rather than merely avoiding them.

What are Schematic cards?

Schematics are Yordle-specific abilities unlocked through campaign progress.

At the start of later missions, players can select unlocked Schematics for their chosen character.

They activate when the shared Team Gear level reaches the required threshold and give the mechs increasingly dramatic powers as the campaign progresses.

How long is the campaign?

Both 2026 editions contain the full ten-mission cooperative campaign.

Each mission has a different setup, objective and special rules. Early missions teach the system gradually, while later missions add hazards, bosses and more demanding programming challenges.

Completing missions also unlocks new Schematics and abilities.

The relaunch does not replace this campaign with new missions; the Bandle City and Classic editions preserve the original ten-mission game.

How boss battles work

Some missions add a dedicated Danger Phase and boss systems.

The Boss Mech can have its own smaller Command Line and draft/program behavior, effectively creating a programmed enemy that evolves alongside the players.

This is one example of how the campaign changes the basic system rather than simply increasing Minion counts.

Can Mechs vs. Minions be played solo?

The original ten-mission campaign is fundamentally designed around cooperative mech programming for 2–4 players.

The 2026 anniversary editions add a 10-card Solo Puzzle Pack. Riot’s Classic Edition component list explicitly includes those ten solo puzzle cards, and Bandle City retailers describe the same new solo challenge content.

This should be distinguished from claiming that the full cooperative campaign has been redesigned as a conventional one-player campaign.

Do you need to know League of Legends?

No.

The four playable characters — Corki, Heimerdinger, Tristana and Ziggs — come from League of Legends, and fans will recognize places, names and skins.

But the campaign explains its own goals and mechanisms. Knowing League lore does not provide a rules advantage.

The 2026 relaunch FAQ makes the same point about the included skin cards: they work whether or not you recognize the videogame references.

The publisher FAQ is explicit: the two editions contain the same game. The $125 price difference is about components and presentation rather than additional campaign content.

What is the Bandle City Edition?

The Bandle City Edition is the smaller, lower-cost 2026 relaunch.

Incredible Dream currently lists it at $74.99. The most significant savings come from replacing the original’s large miniature count with acrylic standees for the main mechs/boss and cardboard Minion tokens.

The smaller 300 × 300 × 122 mm box is designed to fit a standard game shelf.

For buyers primarily interested in playing rather than collecting miniatures, this is the more economical version.

What is the 2026 Classic Edition?

The Classic Edition recreates the premium physical presentation associated with the original release.

Riot Games currently lists it at $199.99.

It includes four painted sculpted Mechs, a painted/sculpted Boss, a sculpted Bomb and 100 sculpted Minion miniatures, plus upgraded trackers and components.

Riot describes it as a limited commemorative relaunch, so it is aimed more directly at collectors and fans who specifically want the miniature-heavy version.

What are the new Skin cards?

Both 2026 editions include 12 Skin cards, three per champion.

The standard included sets are:

  • Original
  • Fantasy
  • Invaders

The presale also includes four bonus skins: Arcade Corki, Arcane Professor Heimerdinger, Hextech Tristana and Hextech Ziggs.

The publisher says these are cosmetic and do not change gameplay.

When does the 2026 relaunch ship?

The current Bandle City presale FAQ says orders are expected to ship on or before December 31, 2026 in the United States and January 31, 2027 in the European Union.

The publisher says earlier November shipping may be possible but is not guaranteed.

Hachette Boardgames UK lists an official UK launch date of November 25, 2026.

These are current estimates, not guarantees, so they should be rechecked before ordering.

Will the new edition be localized?

The 2026 relaunch announcement lists additional distribution/localization partners.

English distribution includes the US, Canada, UK, Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand. The publisher also names French and Spanish localization partners and says further announcements will follow.

Earlier Riot printings existed in Italian, German, French and Spanish, but those older editions are retired products and should not be confused with confirmed 2026 language availability.

What happened to the original Mechs vs. Minions?

Riot’s earlier print waves were retired, and the anniversary publisher states that the game had been out of print since 2020.

The 2026 return is described as a faithful relaunch rather than a redesigned second edition.

The rules, ten campaign missions and core card content remain the same between the two new builds.

Who may like Mechs vs. Minions?

It is a strong fit for groups that like cooperative planning but enjoy plans going slightly wrong.

It can also work well for players who find many campaign games too rules-heavy because the missions introduce complexity gradually.

It may be less suitable if you dislike forced command execution, prefer complete control over every movement, want a long narrative legacy campaign or mainly play solo.

Seven strategy principles for new players

  • Leave empty slots intentionally. Filling all six too quickly can trap you in a bad program.
  • Draft for your teammates as well as yourself. A perfect card for you may prevent another mech from fixing a critical problem.
  • Use scrap effects. Not every drafted card belongs in the program.
  • Think through pushes before execution begins. Moving another mech can rotate an entire plan from good to disastrous.
  • Stack colors when the power increase matters. A stronger slot is valuable only if its position in the sequence remains useful.
  • Kill Minions efficiently to raise Team Gears. Schematics and Overdrive can change later turns dramatically.
  • Plan for the mission objective, not just Minion removal. Many missions can be lost while the team is winning the local fight.

Seven things to know before buying

  • Bandle City and Classic contain the same campaign.
  • The Classic Edition does not add $125 of extra gameplay. The difference is largely component quality.
  • The main campaign remains a 2–4 player cooperative game.
  • The 2026 editions add a new solo-puzzle product layer. Do not confuse that with a full redesign of the campaign for solo play.
  • You do not need League of Legends knowledge.
  • Skin cards are cosmetic.
  • Shipping dates are estimates. Recheck regional delivery before ordering.
