Spirit Island Strategy: Prevent Builds, Manage Fear & Plan Slow Powers
Editorial analysis: Spirit Island is easier when you plan around the Invader timeline rather than reacting only to the current Ravage. Preventing tomorrow’s Build or moving an Explorer today can remove an entire future problem.
Read the Invader row from right to left
Ravage is urgent, but Explore is often where the cheapest intervention exists. A single Push, Gather or damage effect against an Explorer can prevent a Build, which can prevent a later Ravage from ever becoming dangerous.
Growth should solve the next two turns
Presence placement, card plays and Energy form a three-way economy. Adding Presence is strongest when it exposes the income or card-play threshold needed for your next planned hand rather than merely expanding range.
Fast powers prevent; Slow powers reshape
Fast powers are best for stopping a Ravage, interrupting a Build or moving pieces before Invaders act. Slow powers are often better treated as setup for next round: remove new buildings, reposition Dahan or clean up newly explored lands.
Defense is not always better than prevention
Defend can preserve Dahan and prevent Blight, but it does not remove future Invader production by itself. Compare the cost of defending a land with the cost of destroying or moving the Town/City that would keep causing trouble.
Fear is a tempo track
Fear cards can solve problems and Terror Levels reduce the number of Invaders required for victory. Generating Fear is therefore not only “points toward the end”; it can lower the cleanup burden of the whole team.
Let Spirits specialize without becoming isolated
One Spirit may control movement while another deals damage or defense. Specialization is efficient, but a Spirit that can only solve its own board wastes the cooperative design. Use range and support powers to redistribute Energy, elements, Presence and positioning.
Accept some Blight when it buys growth
Not every Ravage deserves maximum resources. If preventing one Blight costs several cards and stops you from growing, the long-term cost can be worse. The correct threshold depends on the current Blight state, Spirit Presence and adversary rules.
Endgame: switch from control to victory condition
At Terror Level II or III, you no longer need to remove every Explorer. Count only the pieces that matter to the current victory condition. A turn that destroys the final City can be better than a broad defensive turn that leaves it standing.
