What is The Quest for El Dorado?
The Quest for El Dorado is Reiner Knizia’s deck-building race for 2–4 players. Each expedition begins with a modest card deck and must improve it while moving across modular jungle terrain.
The current Ravensburger edition lists a 45–60 minute play time and uses a market of expedition cards to shape each player’s route.
How the game works
Cards generate movement values for different terrain types or provide special effects. You play cards from your hand to move your explorer, then can buy new cards that enter your discard pile and eventually cycle into future hands.
Map layouts create different chokepoints and terrain mixes, so the best deck depends on the route rather than on one universal card strategy.
The decisions that define it
Every purchase trades immediate tempo for future efficiency. A powerful card bought too late may never cycle back into your hand before the race ends.
Position also matters because opponents can occupy spaces and make narrow routes harder to traverse.
