Catan Victory Points: How to Win, Longest Road & Largest Army

In standard 3–4 player CATAN, you win when you reach 10 victory points on your own turn. Settlements, cities, Longest Road, Largest Army and Victory Point development cards can all contribute.

Where the 10 points come from

SourceVictory points
Settlement1
City2 total for that piece
Longest Road2
Largest Army2
Victory Point development card1 each

Upgrading a settlement to a city changes that location from 1 point to 2; it does not give 1 + 2 for the same intersection.

Longest Road is worth 2 points

You need a qualifying continuous road of at least five pieces and it must be longer than every opponent’s qualifying road to take Longest Road. Its two points can move between players as road networks change.

Branches, loops and interruptions create common mistakes. Use our Catan Longest Road guide for exact counting examples.

Largest Army is worth 2 points

The first player to have played at least three Knight cards and more Knights than every opponent takes Largest Army. Another player can take it later by exceeding the current holder’s played-Knight count.

Victory Point cards can make your visible total misleading

Victory Point development cards are normally kept hidden until they contribute to a win. An opponent who appears to have eight visible points may already have the hidden points needed to reach ten on their own turn.

The win happens on your own turn

Once you have the required 10 points on your turn, you win. There is no final round to equalize turns and no normal end-game tiebreak calculation.

If another player’s action or an award transfer would make your total look like ten outside your turn, that does not replace the rule that victory is declared on your own turn.

Example 10-point finish

Three settlements give 3 points, two cities give 4, Longest Road gives 2 and one Victory Point card gives 1. The total is 10 points, enough to win on your turn.
