Catan Expansions Guide: Seafarers, Cities & Knights and More
Catan has several major expansions, and they change the base game in very different ways. Some extend the map, some add heavier development systems, and others package multiple scenarios and variants.

Seafarers
Catan: Seafarers expands the island into a sea map with ships, multiple islands, gold fields and a pirate. The box contains nine voyages/scenarios built around exploration and settlement beyond the original island.
Seafarers is the easiest major expansion to learn because most of the base-game economy remains intact. Roads gain a sea counterpart in ships, and scenario rules change the map and victory target without replacing the core trading/building loop.
Choose Seafarers if: your group likes standard Catan but wants larger maps, exploration and more geographic variety without significantly increasing rules weight.
Cities & Knights
Cities & Knights substantially changes the development game. Cities produce commodities, players improve city-development tracks, knights become movable pieces, and a barbarian force periodically threatens the island.
This is the expansion that most strongly turns Catan into a heavier strategy game. You are still trading and building roads, settlements and cities, but city protection, knight strength and development tracks add long-term planning and greater punishment for falling behind.
Choose Cities & Knights if: your group already knows Catan well and wants more strategic density, stronger interaction and a longer game.
Traders & Barbarians
Traders & Barbarians is a collection of variants and five scenarios rather than one single rules system. It includes ways to change normal Catan, including a two-player variant, and scenarios that add new objectives and tactical systems.
Because the box is modular, it works well for groups that enjoy changing the game from session to session rather than adopting one permanent expansion ruleset.
Choose Traders & Barbarians if: replay variety matters more to you than one large new strategic system.
Explorers & Pirates
Explorers & Pirates focuses on exploration and scenario objectives. Ships are handled differently from Seafarers, and the expansion builds around missions rather than simply extending the original road-and-settlement race.
This makes it feel more like a structured adventure campaign layered onto Catan’s economy.
Choose Explorers & Pirates if: you want discovery and changing objectives to matter more than classic longest-road-style network competition.
Can Catan expansions be combined?
Some can. The official Catan site specifically documents combinations such as Seafarers with Cities & Knights and various Traders & Barbarians scenarios. Compatibility is not universal, however, and some modules change ships or scenario structure in ways that should not be combined casually.

What about 5–6 player expansions?
The 5–6 player boxes are player-count extensions, not substitutes for the corresponding expansion. For example, playing Cities & Knights with 5–6 players requires the base Catan game, the base 5–6 player extension, Cities & Knights, and its matching 5–6 player extension.
Which Catan expansion should you buy first?
For most groups that simply want “more Catan,” Seafarers is the lowest-friction first step. If your group wants a significantly deeper game and is comfortable with longer sessions, Cities & Knights changes the experience more dramatically.
