Wyrmspan Strategy: Cave Engines, Coins & Dragon Guild Timing

Wyrmspan rewards engines that are not merely powerful but cheap enough to activate repeatedly. A cave full of impressive dragons can still underperform if repeated exploration consumes too many eggs or if the ability order does not feed its own costs.

1. Excavate before the space becomes urgent

You cannot entice a dragon into an unexcavated space. If a valuable dragon appears, needing an extra Excavate action first may cost the opportunity. Keep at least one future habitat prepared when possible.

2. Build left-to-right chains intentionally

Explore resolves abilities left to right. Place resource-generating effects before abilities that spend those resources when possible. Good sequencing allows one activation to fund the next.

3. Coins are your turn budget

Most normal actions consume coins. A point-generating action that also creates or preserves a coin can effectively extend your round. Evaluate cards partly by whether they increase the number of meaningful turns you can afford.

4. Eggs are both points and action fuel

Eggs score at game end but also pay for deeper excavation and repeated exploration. Hoarding every egg can leave your engine underdeveloped; spending all of them can erase easy end-game points. Use them where the resulting engine creates more than the sacrificed value.

5. Fill stop-sign gaps in caves you plan to explore

An empty excavated space can stop your adventurer. If one cave is your main engine, filling its early positions with compatible dragons is often more important than scattering dragons across all three rows.

6. Do not over-explore a weak cave

The second and third exploration of a cave in a round costs extra eggs. Repeat only when the chain’s output justifies the rising cost.

7. Align Dragon Guild advancement with marker spaces

Guild advancement gives immediate track benefits and opportunities to place limited markers on the Guild tile. Look ahead before triggering several Guild advances so you know which reward spaces are likely to be available.

8. Track public objectives early

Each round has an objective, and ties are friendly. Build toward categories that overlap with your engine instead of making expensive last-turn pivots solely to move one scoring rank.

9. Respect hand and resource limits

At the end of your turn, capacity limits can force discards. Convert excess cards/resources into cave development, dragon costs, caches or tucks before they become wasted surplus.

10. Shift to end-game assets in round four

Late excavation is valuable only if it enables another scoring action. In the final round, prioritize visible dragon VP, eggs, cached resources, tucked cards, objectives, Guild scoring and efficient remaining-coin conversion.

Common strategic mistakes

• Collecting dragons without preparing habitats for them.
• Building ability chains in an inefficient left-to-right order.
• Spending eggs on repeated exploration that produces little net value.
• Ignoring a stop sign inside the cave you expect to activate most.
• Finishing round four with an engine that was built but never explored.
