Forest Shuffle: Dartmoor: Exmoor is Lookout’s 2026 expansion for the 2025 Dartmoor standalone. Its 55 cards comprise 50 cards to mix into Dartmoor’s deck and five new caves. The base game is required. Despite the shared Forest Shuffle name, the original 2023 Forest Shuffle box and its expansions are a different line; Exmoor does not attach to that deck.

What is new in the box?

Exmoor adds shrubs, moor terrains, top/bottom and left/right inhabitants, with flora and fauna from the national park farther north in Devon. The new caves offer different asymmetric openings. Some inhabitants introduce a way to search the clearing for a suitable card and put it directly into your forest without paying. The expansion also grows existing species groups: a Golden-Ringed Dragonfly brings the number of different dragonflies available to six, while Dartmoor Pony, Exmoor Pony and Exmoor Pony Foal all count as ponies.

The underlying turn remains the familiar choice: draw cards or play a paid card, then use effects and bonuses as appropriate. Exmoor changes what can be found and which combinations score; it does not make the original Forest Shuffle cards legal parts of this deck.

Set up with the new removal counts

Follow the base game’s treatment of the winter cards and caves. Mix Dartmoor’s playable cards with the 50 Exmoor deck cards. Then return cards to the box unseen according to player count. The Exmoor rulebook changes the base setup numbers:

PlayersCards removed with ExmoorBase Dartmoor count
27045
34030
42515
5100

For two players, Lookout suggests shuffling then making three equal piles and removing one unseen; for three, make five piles and remove one. Use the new five Exmoor caves instead of the base caves when you reach cave selection. Players still draft caves in reverse turn order under the base rules. Build the draw stack with winter cards as instructed in Dartmoor, then start with six cards each.

How the new clearing effect works

One Exmoor effect lets you put a card matching its requirement from the clearing into your forest at no cost, without using that card’s effect or bonus. If no suitable card is face up, reveal cards from the deck into the clearing, up to three in total, stopping when one qualifies. If none qualifies after three, the effect gets no card. You do not get to select any unrelated clearing card to compensate.

A second new icon can put three clearing cards into your forest without their effects or bonuses. When the clearing lacks enough, the rule allows revealing up to seven deck cards to find more; if fewer than three are available after that, play as many as you can. Both effects still require you to respect the placement rules for species and moors. They can also reveal winter cards, so a late-game attempt at “free” cards has timing risk.

What changes in scoring?

The usual third-winter ending, visible-card scoring and cave point rule remain. The new cards’ own conditions add combinations. In particular, count the Golden-Ringed Dragonfly as an additional different species for dragonfly collection, and treat the three named pony forms as ponies when a card asks for ponies. Do not treat the word “Foal” as a separate non-pony category for that purpose. Use the expansion’s printed cards and Lookout’s appendix for individual conditions rather than assuming every Exmoor animal scores like a base animal.

Compatibility before you buy

  • Own Dartmoor only: you already have a full two-to-five-player game; Exmoor is optional.
  • Own original Forest Shuffle only: Exmoor is not its expansion. You need the Dartmoor standalone first.
  • Own both standalones: keep their decks and respective expansion lines separate, as the Dartmoor rulebook directs.
  • Interested in solo: Lookout’s Dartmoor page offers separate print-and-play Automa resources. Exmoor’s box is not a replacement solo set.

For a first Dartmoor game, learn how moors and caves work in the base rules guide. Then use this page when adding Exmoor. The strategy guide covers clearing tempo, and scoring explains visible species and caves.
