Catan Seafarers Rules & Expansion Guide

Catan: Seafarers keeps the trading and settlement core of Catan but extends the board across the sea. Ships create maritime routes, scenarios add multiple islands and exploration objectives, gold fields broaden resource access, and the pirate pressures shipping lanes.

What Seafarers adds

  • Ships and sea routes
  • Multiple-island scenarios
  • Gold fields
  • The pirate
  • Scenario-specific victory conditions and special rules

How ships work

Ships perform the sea-network role that roads perform on land. They extend from your coastal network across sea edges and connect settlements on different islands. Unlike roads, ships in an open shipping route can sometimes be moved, which makes maritime expansion more flexible.

A shipping route becomes closed when it connects two of your buildings. Closed routes are no longer freely rearranged.

Gold fields

A gold field does not produce a unique “gold” resource card. When a number on the hex produces, adjacent owners choose a normal resource according to the scenario rules. That flexibility makes gold locations especially valuable.

The pirate

The pirate is the maritime counterpart to the robber. It affects shipping rather than land production, and scenario rules determine its placement and movement. Check the scenario before assuming every pirate interaction works exactly like the robber.

Scenarios matter

Seafarers is not one fixed map. The official rulebook contains multiple voyages/scenarios with different layouts, exploration rules and victory targets. Teach the common ship rules first, then add only the special rules for the selected scenario.

Can Seafarers combine with Cities & Knights?

Yes. CATAN publishes specific combination rules. Roads-related Cities & Knights effects generally extend to ships where appropriate, knights can interact with connected shipping routes, and barbarians threaten all islands together. The publisher recommends some Seafarers scenarios more strongly than highly fragmented exploration maps.

What do you need for 5–6 players?

For 5–6 player Seafarers you need four boxes: the Catan base game, the base 5–6 player extension, Seafarers, and the Seafarers 5–6 player extension.

Who should add Seafarers?

Seafarers is the cleanest expansion for groups that want more Catan without replacing the base game’s economy. It adds geographic planning and exploration while leaving trading, building and resource production familiar.
