Horror on the Orient Express Expansions
Choose between more investigator/suspect variety, replacement monster sets and a five-scenario linked campaign.
Horror on the Orient Express launched with three major content expansions: Investigators Unveiled, New Monstrosities and Consumed by the Void. They are not three versions of the same idea. One increases character and suspect variety, one changes the monster mix, and one turns the system into a linked campaign.
Quick comparison
| Expansion | Main addition | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Investigators Unveiled | More playable investigators and more suspect combinations | Replayability with the core mystery system |
| New Monstrosities | Three alternative monster families | Groups that want the threat layer to change |
| Consumed by the Void | Five linked scenarios with campaign progression | Groups wanting a multi-session narrative arc |
Investigators Unveiled
Investigators Unveiled expands the human side of the game. Characters who appear as suspects in the base system can become playable investigators, and investigator identities can also enter the suspect pool.
The result is a larger set of possible mystery configurations rather than a new rules framework. BoardGameGeek’s current listing says the expansion brings the total to ten playable investigators and includes 78 Skill tiles, six Investigator portraits, six Profession tiles and four Suspect boards.
Who should buy it? Players who like the deduction core and expect to replay the base game repeatedly. It changes who can be investigated and who can be controlled without adding the overhead of a new campaign structure.
New Monstrosities
New Monstrosities adds three alternative monster types. During setup, you choose which version of each color to use, while keeping three different monster colors in the game.
The published set includes seven flying monsters, five abducting/insect-style monsters, three Flower Lady miniatures and three new Monster cards. Their abilities change how the external threat system pressures passengers and train cars.
Who should buy it? Groups that already understand the core monsters and want more tactical variance. Because it changes the crisis layer rather than the deduction structure, it is better as a second-step expansion than a first-game inclusion.
Consumed by the Void
Consumed by the Void is the largest structural change. Chaosium describes it as a five-scenario campaign designed to be played in order. Progress carries forward, scenarios introduce new rules and components, and setbacks can reduce later advantages rather than necessarily ending the campaign immediately.
The campaign includes a mysterious detective, new starting landscapes and additional enemies. Gamefound’s development update also explains that each scenario begins with a narrative prologue around a major stop on the route, where players choose how to spend limited time before the next leg.
Who should buy it? A consistent group that wants five connected sessions. If your main appeal is the single-session deduction puzzle, Investigators Unveiled or New Monstrosities adds variety with less commitment.
Do you need the expansions for the base game?
No. The base game is complete and includes the investigator, suspect, passenger, monster, vampire and deduction systems needed for normal play. The expansions are modular additions.
For a first game, use the base box alone. Horror on the Orient Express already has a large setup and several interacting systems, so adding replacement monsters or campaign exceptions before learning the normal flow increases teaching burden without solving a real problem.
Which expansion should you buy first?
For most groups, Investigators Unveiled is the least disruptive first addition because it increases variety inside a rules structure you already know. Choose New Monstrosities first if monster management is your favorite part of the base game. Choose Consumed by the Void first only if the reason you bought the game was to have a continuing story across multiple sessions.
Kickstarter pledge contents vs. expansion names
The original crowdfunding campaign bundled some content into pledge levels and also sold optional upgrade components. Do not assume that every box or token set from a crowdfunding photo is a gameplay expansion.
For example, premium component packs and cosmetic upgrades are separate from the three main content expansions discussed here. If you are buying second-hand, ask the seller to name the included boxes rather than relying on labels such as “all-in” or “deluxe.”
Retail availability
As of 7 October 2026, crowdfunding fulfillment is still completing in some regions and general distribution is beginning on a separate timetable. Retailers already list the expansions, but availability dates vary by country and language.
That means “released” on a database and “available at my local retailer” are not necessarily the same date. For localized editions in particular, use the regional publisher or retailer estimate.
