Dominion: Arcana
Dominion’s seventeenth expansion is a 500-card set built around leveling up, Studies, Carts and the return of Projects.
Dominion: Arcana is the seventeenth Dominion expansion by Donald X. Vaccarino. Rio Grande Games currently lists it as a Q4 2026 new release. The box contains 500 cards and 37 new Kingdom card piles, including five Victory-card piles.
The publisher has announced the expansion’s broad themes—Studies that improve cards, Carts that improve your economy, and returning Projects—but has not yet published a full official Arcana rulebook through the sources checked for this update. This guide therefore separates confirmed information from mechanics that are still unknown.
Dominion Arcana release date
As of 7 October 2026, the most precise official release window is Q4 2026. Rio Grande Games labels Arcana “New Release Q4 2026” on both the Arcana product page and its current game catalog.
There is no exact official street date yet. A retailer may show a preorder estimate, but that should not be treated as the global release date until Rio Grande provides a specific day or the product is confirmed in stock.

What does Dominion: Arcana add?
Rio Grande describes Arcana’s central theme as leveling up. Three announced ideas define the set so far:
- Studies — the publisher says these improve your cards.
- Carts — the publisher says these improve your economy.
- Projects — the landscape mechanism introduced in Dominion: Renaissance returns.
That is the limit of what the official product description currently confirms. It does not yet explain the timing, cost, setup or exact rules framework for Studies or Carts.
What are Studies?
The official description says Studies are used to improve cards. Until the Arcana rulebook or designer previews define the mechanism, it is premature to say whether a Study is a card type, landscape, token-based system, upgrade track or something else.
If you see detailed explanations elsewhere before official rules appear, distinguish confirmed card reveals from speculation. The only safe general statement at present is that Studies support the expansion’s “leveling up” theme by improving cards.
What are Carts?
Rio Grande says Carts improve your economy. The announcement does not yet specify whether that means saving resources, improving Treasure, increasing buying capacity, modifying gains or another economic effect.
The name alone is not enough to infer the rules. This page will add a detailed Cart explanation after the publisher releases the rules or official previews establish the mechanism.
Projects return from Renaissance
Projects first appeared in Dominion: Renaissance. In that expansion, Projects are shared landscape cards that players can buy into for persistent abilities rather than adding a card to the deck.
Arcana officially brings Projects back. That does not mean every Arcana Project will resemble Renaissance strategically; it only confirms that the established Project rules framework is returning as part of the new set.
Is Arcana a standalone game?
No. Rio Grande explicitly says Arcana cannot be played by itself. You need the basic Treasure, Victory and Curse cards plus the Dominion rulebook. The current Dominion base game provides those.
If you already own the required Basic cards separately, the publisher says Arcana can be combined with them and the basic-game rules. Arcana can also be mixed with any other Dominion expansion.
How big is Arcana compared with other Dominion expansions?
At 500 cards and 37 Kingdom piles, Arcana is one of the larger Dominion boxes. For comparison, the immediately preceding expansion, Rising Sun, is a 300-card set with 25 Kingdom piles.
Raw card count does not tell you how complicated Arcana will be. The more important learning burden will depend on how Studies and Carts work, how many Projects are included, and how often those systems appear in a normal Kingdom.
Arcana vs. Rising Sun
| Arcana | Rising Sun | |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Q4 2026 release | Available |
| Cards | 500 | 300 |
| Kingdom piles | 37 | 25 |
| Main announced ideas | Studies, Carts, Projects, leveling up | Shadows, Prophecies, Debt, Events |
| Standalone? | No | No |
If you want a Dominion expansion you can buy and fully evaluate today, Rising Sun has mature rules and card information. Arcana is the more relevant choice only if you specifically want the forthcoming leveling-up systems and are comfortable waiting for final rules and availability.
What is still unknown?
Several details remain unconfirmed through the official sources checked on 7 October:
- an exact release day inside Q4 2026;
- the complete Arcana rulebook;
- the exact rules for Studies;
- the exact rules for Carts;
- the final breakdown of Projects and other non-Kingdom cards;
- recommended Kingdom setups and detailed card interactions.
Those gaps are important. A product announcement can establish the size and headline mechanisms without being enough to publish a responsible rules or strategy guide.
Should you preorder Arcana?
The useful decision is whether the confirmed theme is enough for you. Arcana is unusually large, returns Projects and introduces two new named systems around card improvement and economy. That makes it potentially attractive to experienced Dominion players who want a large new card pool.
If your purchase depends on knowing exactly how Studies and Carts play, wait for the official rules or a complete designer preview. The current announcement is not detailed enough to judge their complexity or strategic impact.
