SETI: Space Agencies is the expansion for Czech Games Edition’s 2024 game SETI: Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. It requires the base game. Its main additions are asymmetric organizations, Quick Start cards, new projects and alien species, and signal tokens that create another way to compete in telescope scanning.

What is in the box?

CGE lists 11 organizations, 21 Quick Start cards, 42 project cards, three alien species with their own rule sheets, long-term objective tiles and signal tokens. The new projects mix into the main deck. The alien species increase the variety of discoveries, so their particular mechanisms are best learned when they appear in play.

How do organizations change the opening?

Each organization pushes you toward a different style of scientific program. Some reward probe operations, some make scanning more attractive, and others emphasize cards, technology or a balance of paths. That gives players a clearer first direction while retaining the base game’s need to adapt to missions, resources, solar-system positions and alien discoveries.

Quick Start cards are designed for use with the organizations. They give an accelerated, asymmetric opening and can be especially useful when a smaller player count would otherwise have a slow first round. Follow the expansion setup instructions for the selected format rather than adding these cards to a base-game start by assumption.

What are signal tokens?

Signal tokens add flexibility to scanning. CGE describes them as a way to improve scanning efficiency; the designer explains that they can help close or contest a sector without committing fully to telescope technology. They can come from expansion effects, including new cards. This makes occasional scanning more plausible for a probe-focused organization, while dedicated scanning remains a substantial investment.

Does it change the base game’s scoring?

The five-round structure and the base game’s end-of-game scoring still provide the foundation. New cards, organizations and alien rules can add effects that alter a specific player’s points or decisions; resolve the actual text of the components in play. The expansion broadens the routes to scoring rather than turning SETI into a different game.

Who should add Space Agencies?

It is a good fit if you already enjoy SETI and want more opening asymmetry, project variety and alien discovery combinations. The organizations can also suggest underexplored strategies, especially scanning. If you are teaching a first game, the base game is a simpler starting point: learn probe movement, signals, data and final scoring first, then add organizations.

Practical first-play tips

  1. Choose an organization whose direction you can explain in one sentence, then keep a second path available when the board changes.
  2. Use Quick Start cards only with their matching expansion setup rules.
  3. Check whether a signal token turns a sector into a timely win before spending a full action or upgrade on scanning.
  4. When an alien species is discovered, read its rule sheet at that time and check any new final-scoring condition.
