Dominion Rising Sun Expansion Guide: Shadows, Prophecies, Debt & Events

Dominion: Rising Sun is the 16th released Dominion expansion. It adds Shadow cards and Prophecies, while bringing back Debt and Events from earlier sets.

Current-line note: Rio Grande has announced Dominion: Arcana as the 17th expansion for Q4 2026. As of September 21, 2026, Rising Sun remains the latest released expansion.

What Rising Sun adds

  • 25 Kingdom card piles
  • Shadow cards
  • Prophecies
  • Returning Debt costs
  • Returning Events

Shadow cards

Shadow cards can interact with your deck in unusual ways and are designed to feel less constrained by the normal rule that useful cards must first reach your hand.

Prophecies

Prophecies are global effects that do not begin active. They are approached over the course of the game and, once fulfilled, can change the rules or incentives for everyone.

Debt returns

Debt lets cards or effects carry a cost that does not need to be paid like ordinary coin at the moment of purchase. Players must clear Debt before making normal purchases again.

Events return

Events are buyable effects rather than cards added to your deck. Rising Sun uses the established Event framework alongside its new systems.

How Rising Sun fits the current line

Rising Sun was published as Dominion’s 16th expansion. Rio Grande has since announced Arcana as expansion 17, scheduled for Q4 2026.

Who should add Rising Sun?

Choose Rising Sun when you already know Dominion well and want a modern set with more global-state changes and unusual card access. Seaside or Prosperity is simpler as an early expansion.
