Terraforming Mars Prelude Expansion Guide
Prelude accelerates the opening of Terraforming Mars by giving every corporation a stronger, more differentiated starting position. It adds 35 Prelude cards, five corporations and seven project cards without creating a large extra board or ongoing subsystem.

How Prelude changes setup
Players receive Prelude cards during setup and keep a selection that immediately shapes production, resources, tags and strategic direction before normal generations begin. That means corporations start closer to a functioning engine rather than spending several turns merely building baseline production.
Why games feel faster
Prelude front-loads development. It does not remove the core Terraforming Mars systems, but it reduces the amount of time spent in the weakest early state. Projects that would otherwise take several generations to enable can become viable sooner.
Does Prelude add much rules overhead?
No. Most Prelude effects are resolved during setup or act like familiar Terraforming Mars card effects. This is why Prelude is one of the easiest major modules to combine with the base game.
Prelude and solo play
The official Prelude rules shorten the normal solo time limit when Prelude cards are used. Follow the printed solo rules for the edition/module combination you are playing rather than using the base-game generation limit unchanged.
Can Prelude combine with other expansions?
Yes. Prelude is designed to combine with other Terraforming Mars expansions and variants. FryxGames’ expansion guidance treats modules independently: apply the setup and rules changes for each expansion you choose to include.
What about Prelude 2?
Prelude 2 builds on the original Prelude system and includes content designed to interact with later expansion mechanics. It does not make the original concept obsolete; it expands the opening-card ecosystem.
Who should add Prelude?
Prelude is a strong first expansion for groups that like Terraforming Mars but want more differentiated openings and less slow early buildup without adding a complex side board.
