Wingspan Oceania Expansion Guide: Nectar, New Mats & Rules

Wingspan: Oceania Expansion changes the base game’s economy more than the European Expansion. It adds 95 new bird cards, nectar as a new food type, replacement player mats, new food dice, bonus cards and end-of-round goals.

What comes in Oceania?

  • 95 unique bird cards
  • 5 replacement player mats
  • 5 food dice
  • 69 nectar tokens
  • 5 bonus cards
  • 4 goal tiles
  • 15 yellow eggs
  • Updated scorepad/reference material and Automa support

Why nectar matters

Nectar is a flexible food type that can substitute broadly when paying food costs, which changes how often players are locked out by the birdfeeder. It also creates its own competitive scoring incentives, so spending nectar is not merely equivalent to spending another food.

Because nectar is intentionally temporary and strategically tracked, use the Oceania rules rather than treating it as a permanent wild-food token.

The new player mats

Oceania replaces the original player mats. The action rows were rebalanced, changing how quickly food, eggs and cards scale as habitats fill. This is one reason Oceania affects the feel of every turn even when no Oceania bird is in your hand.

Can Oceania cards mix with other expansions?

Yes. Stonemaier states that Oceania bird cards are designed to be shuffled into the base-game bird deck with or without other expansions. When using Oceania’s economy, use its mats, food dice and nectar rules consistently for the whole table.

Does Oceania require Wingspan?

Yes. Oceania is not standalone; the core Wingspan game is required.

Who should add Oceania?

Oceania is a strong choice for groups that want the familiar Wingspan engine but want the resource economy and habitat-action balance to feel different. If you only want more birds with minimal rules change, European is the lighter addition.
