Scythe Encounters Expansion Guide: 32 New Encounter Cards

Scythe Encounters is a compact content expansion containing 32 new encounter cards, numbered 43–74. The cards were designed from fan submissions and developed by Jamey Stegmaier.

What Scythe Encounters adds

  • 32 new encounter cards
  • New narrative choices and outcomes
  • Fresh strategic trade-offs without changing the action-selection system

How the new cards differ

The cards are designed to create more unusual encounter decisions than the original deck. Some effects are larger, stranger or more situational, so they can change how valuable encounter spaces feel.

Should you mix them immediately?

Stonemaier’s published guidance recommends playing with the Encounters deck on its own for a few games before shuffling those cards into the regular encounter deck. That gives the new designs room to appear frequently enough that your group actually experiences the expansion.

Does Encounters change setup?

Only lightly. It does not add a new board, faction or phase. The main change is which encounter-card deck you use.

Does it work with other Scythe expansions?

Yes. Encounters is a card-pool expansion and is compatible with the wider Scythe line.

Who should add Scythe Encounters?

Choose it when your group likes Scythe’s encounter system and wants more variety with almost no additional rules burden. Wind Gambit and Rise of Fenris change the game much more substantially.
