Wyrmspan: Dragon Academy Expansion Guide
Dragon Academy is the first major expansion for Wyrmspan. It adds more dragons and caves, new objectives and Dragon Guilds, plus a new training-token system and a replacement round tracker that gives players an income choice when they pass.
What Dragon Academy adds
The expansion includes:
- 80 new dragon cards
- 25 new cave cards
- 5 double-sided Dragon Guild tiles
- 7 double-sided objective tiles
- 45 training tokens
- A new round tracker that changes the pass/income decision
- Updated replacement cards and components for a small number of base-game items
Training tokens
Training tokens are the expansion’s clearest new development resource. They create another way to improve the value of your sanctuary and interact with new card abilities.
The important strategic change is that some turns now evaluate not only immediate resources, eggs and Guild progress, but also whether a training investment improves later activations.
New round tracker and income choices
Dragon Academy replaces the original round tracker with a version that presents an income choice when you pass for the round. Passing therefore becomes more than simply ending your actions: the timing of your pass can influence how you prepare for the next round.
More dragons and caves
The 80 dragons and 25 caves substantially increase the card pool. Because Wyrmspan’s engine depends on left-to-right cave sequencing, more cards increase both replayability and the number of possible activation chains.
New Dragon Guilds
Five double-sided Guild tiles expand the shared Guild system. This matters because Guild advancement is already a major source of immediate benefits and end-game scoring in the base game.
New objectives
Seven double-sided objective tiles add more round-scoring conditions. This increases the need to evaluate whether your sanctuary’s natural development already aligns with the current objective or whether chasing it would cost too much engine efficiency.
Does Dragon Academy change the base-game setup?
Yes. It adds its new card pools, Guild and objective content, training tokens and replacement round tracker. The publisher also includes a small number of updated base-game cards/components, so use the expansion’s setup and replacement instructions rather than simply shuffling every new card into the old setup without checking.
Can you play Dragon Academy without Wyrmspan?
No. Dragon Academy is an expansion and requires the Wyrmspan base game.
Who should add Dragon Academy?
Add it when your group already understands excavating, enticing dragons, cave exploration and Dragon Guild timing. New players are better served by learning the base game first because the expansion increases card variety and decision density rather than simplifying anything.
