How to Play Forest Shuffle: Trees, Species & the Clearing

Forest Shuffle is a tableau card game where trees create slots for animals, plants and fungi. Cards are also your payment, so every play means giving up other potential future cards to the shared clearing.

On your turn, draw or play

Take the game’s standard draw action or play one card from hand by paying its cost into the clearing. Hand limits and clearing limits shape how much information and opportunity remains available.

Trees are the structure of your forest

Tree cards create the central positions of your tableau. Many species cards are split and slide under a tree so only the chosen half remains visible on the appropriate side.

Pay with cards from your hand

To play a card, discard the required number of cards to the shared clearing unless a bonus or effect changes the cost. This creates a public market of cards opponents may later take.

Resolve immediate bonuses and effects

Some species provide instant benefits when played if their placement/payment condition is met. Others mainly create end-game scoring relationships with tree types, species families or adjacent cards.

The deck controls the endgame

Winter cards are shuffled into the lower portion of the deck according to setup. When the required winter trigger appears, the game ends quickly/immediately under the rulebook, so the final turns are uncertain.

Score every visible relationship

Many species use variable end-game formulas. Score printed points plus conditional bonuses for habitats, sets, card types and forest composition.
