Splendor Expansions Guide: Silk Road & The Sun Never Sets
Splendor‘s current expansion line is split across two modular boxes: The Silk Road and The Sun Never Sets. Together they provide four ways to change the base game: Cities, Trading Posts, Orient cards and Strongholds.
Splendor expansion comparison
| Expansion | Modules | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| The Silk Road | Cities + Trading Posts | Groups wanting new victory conditions and persistent bonuses |
| The Sun Never Sets | Orient development cards + Strongholds | Groups wanting more interaction and card effects |
The Silk Road
The Silk Road contains City tiles and Trading Post tiles. Cities replace Nobles and create new victory requirements, while Trading Posts grant powers as you meet color-based development conditions.
The Sun Never Sets
The Sun Never Sets adds 30 Orient development cards and Stronghold pieces. The Orient deck expands card powers, while Strongholds add positional competition over developments.

Can the modules be combined?
Asmodee describes The Silk Road as combinable with other expansions, and the current Splendor line is designed around modular additions. Use each module’s setup rules when combining them.
What about Splendor Duel?
Splendor Duel is a separate two-player game, not an expansion for standard Splendor. It now has its own Counterfeiters expansion and should be treated as a separate product line.
Which Splendor expansion should you get first?
The Silk Road is the cleaner first step if you want to keep the card market familiar while changing scoring and bonuses. The Sun Never Sets is better if you want more card-level interaction.
