Edition: This is the Monster Pack for Zygomatic’s 2024 Survive the Island. It requires the base game. It adds three creature types, Piranha tiles and Egg tiles; the three-phase turn and rescued-treasure victory condition stay in place. You choose the mix before setup, so the pack can change which escape routes feel safe without becoming a separate game.
What is in the expansion?
The box provides five Whales, four Krakens and three Pterodactyls, plus six Piranha tiles, two Egg tiles and two Egg tokens. It also includes player aids and stickers for marking kraken starting spaces. The base box already has sharks, sea serpents and kaijus; Monster Pack does not replace the original rules reference.
How do you choose creatures?
There are three die colors. Choose at least one creature type of each color, for a total of three to six types: red sea serpents and/or krakens; green sharks and/or pterodactyls; blue kaijus and/or whales. The number of pieces used for a type differs if both types of its color are selected, so follow the table in the expansion rulebook. During the creature phase, a die color lets the active player choose one eligible creature of that color on the board; if none is there, nothing moves.
Sea serpents or krakens are placed at setup according to the selected red creatures. Green and blue creatures enter later from the appropriate tile effects. This prevents a group from simply adding every piece to the island at the start.
What do the three new creatures do?
Whales move through water and eliminate rafts, changing the value of crowded transport. Pterodactyls fly in a straight direction and target a space with at most one adventurer; they threaten isolated figures, including swimmers, rather than operating like a shark. Krakens move one water space, interact with swimmers, then use their power to eliminate one adventurer in their space or an adjacent space. The kraken’s extra target can be on land or a raft, so moving into a neighboring space is not enough to dismiss the threat.
Editorial example: A raft full of valuable passengers is especially exposed to a whale, while sending one valuable adventurer alone toward a Rescue Island invites a pterodactyl route. With both red types in play, the die color can create a genuine choice between a serpent’s broad raft threat and a kraken’s targeted adjacent strike. Follow the printed movement diagrams and legal stopping spaces before resolving either.
Piranhas and Eggs are separate choices
The Piranha option replaces one specified Beach tile during setup. Revealing the red Effect tile makes a dangerous water space and distributes the retained green Piranha Abilities; those Abilities extend the hazard to adjacent water spaces when played. Anything moved or placed on a Piranha tile is eliminated, including rafts and creatures. The Egg option replaces one green and one blue Creature Beach tile. On revealing an Egg, place its token on a water space; at the beginning of your next Action phase, roll the die to hatch a creature of that color. Use the expansion’s replacement instructions, rather than adding extra Beach tiles without removing the originals.
Which combination fits your group?
Start with one or two new creature types if your group is still learning what sharks, serpents and kaijus do. Add the tile options when players can already resolve the creature phase without slowing down. The publisher permits all components together; there is no new scoring system to learn. For a family that dislikes losing a carefully planned raft to more hazards, the base game already provides a complete experience.
