Wingspan European Expansion Guide: 81 Birds, Powers & Goals

Wingspan: European Expansion is the simplest major way to make Wingspan larger without replacing the core economy. It adds 81 unique bird cards, new bonus cards and goals, and introduces several new styles of bird power.

What comes in the European Expansion?

  • 81 unique bird cards
  • 5 bonus cards
  • 5 goal tiles
  • 15 purple eggs
  • 38 food tokens
  • Automa cards, scorepad and storage tray

Round-end bird powers

European introduces birds with powers that resolve at the end of a round. These create another timing layer because a bird’s value depends not only on habitat activations but also on how many future round ends remain.

More player interaction

Several European birds react to opponents or affect shared resources. Wingspan remains primarily an engine-building game, but the expansion makes table state and opponent actions matter more often.

Using excess food and cards

Some European birds convert surplus resources into value. This can make late-game food or cards more useful when a base-game engine would otherwise produce more than you can efficiently spend.

Does European change the player mats?

No. It is mainly a card-pool expansion. That makes it much less disruptive than Oceania, which replaces the player mats and food dice.

Can European cards mix with every Wingspan expansion?

Yes. Stonemaier designed the bird and bonus cards to shuffle into the normal Wingspan decks alongside cards from later expansions.

Who should add European first?

European is the cleanest first expansion for groups that want more variety with minimal rules overhead. If your main goal is to rebalance the food economy and habitat actions, Oceania changes more.
