Rummikub Initial Meld Rules: How the 30 Points Work
Before you can manipulate Rummikub sets already on the table, you must make an initial meld totaling at least 30 points.
Where must the 30 points come from?
Only tiles from your own rack. You cannot use existing table tiles to reach 30.
Can the 30 points use more than one set?
Yes. You may play one or more legal groups/runs in the same initial meld; their tile values together must total at least 30.
Does a Joker count?
Yes. In an initial meld, a Joker counts as the value of the tile it represents.
Can you rearrange the table during your initial meld?
No. Your opening 30 must stand on its own from your rack. Table manipulation becomes available on later turns after you have made the initial meld.
What if you cannot make 30?
Draw a tile and end your turn.
