Dominion Expansions Guide: 16 Released Sets + Arcana Preview

Dominion has one of the largest expansion libraries in modern board gaming. Rising Sun is the 16th released expansion. Rio Grande Games has announced Dominion: Arcana as expansion 17 for Q4 2026; as of September 21, 2026, it has not yet been released. Dominion expansions can be mixed with the base game and with other sets.

Several older products now appear in revised or combined editions, most notably Cornucopia & Guilds.

Best early expansions

Intrigue increases interaction and card-choice decisions. Seaside introduces Duration cards that remain in play between turns. Prosperity pushes the economy upward with expensive cards and high-value money/VP options.

Renaissance

Renaissance adds Coffers, Villagers, Projects and Artifacts. It is a strong choice for experienced players who want modern Dominion mechanisms without the heavier setup burden of some later expansions.

Menagerie

Menagerie adds Horses, Exile mats and Ways, plus returning Events. Ways give Action cards alternate uses, creating flexible tactical decisions.

Allies

Allies adds Favors, Ally cards and rotating split piles. It creates another resource layer and rewards building around Liaison cards.

Plunder

Plunder is the 15th expansion. It contains 40 new Kingdom cards and emphasizes Treasures, Duration cards, Loot, Traits and returning Events.

Rising Sun

Rising Sun is the 16th expansion. It adds 25 Kingdom piles, Shadow cards, Prophecies and returning Debt and Event systems.

Dominion: Arcana — announced for Q4 2026

Rio Grande Games lists Arcana as the 17th Dominion expansion with 37 Kingdom card piles, including 5 Victory cards. Its central systems are Studies, Carts and returning Projects. Because the release is scheduled for Q4 2026, this page treats it as upcoming rather than part of the 16 released expansions.

Which Dominion expansion should you get first?

For a first expansion, Intrigue, Seaside or Prosperity keeps the connection to classic Dominion clear. For a more modern-feeling set, Renaissance is a strong entry point.
